young Hugo Provencher may never
forget.
Saturday at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre, the five-year-old
goalie from the Lucan Dominos al-
lowed just one goal during the
overtime shootout against Strath-
roy.
At the annual Exeter Minor

vencher it was quite a day.
Following regulation play, Lucan
scored twice in their five attempts
during the shootout while Strathroy
was stopped by the young netmind-
er.
With a little help from his coach
after the game, Provencher said he
likes playing goal. "You can save a
lot of goals," he said.
During the shootout, his coach
had a few words of advise for him.
"He was saying good try and try
to save it," said Provencher,

Senior 'A' Mohawks may be trying to start up again
They may not be well, but the Exeter Settler 'A' Mohawks are
still alive - at least on paper anyway.
With junior and minor hockey playoffs keeping the hockey
talks going strong throughout town, there is still a glimpse of
light in the future of the Mohawks.
Due to a lack of commitment. the former provincial cham-
pions decided not to ice a team for the 1994-95 season. It's a
tough pill to swallow when you have had a successful club for
so many years and than have to pull the plug.
The Scaforth Ccntenaires, a Junior 'D' organization for many
years, are faced with the possibility of not having a team next
year after over 25 years of existence. Reason - no executive
commitment.
With guys like president Stewart Taylor around, and a few
others, the Mohawks are going to make a bid for returning to the
OHA Southwestern Senior 'A' League.
"We're going to get a meeting together in the next couple of
weeks and see if anyone is interested in reviving it," said Taylor.
"I've talked to a lot of people who miss it,"
The senior league has really dwindled in the last few years.
Going up to Creemore and over to Elora used to be a regular
thing come playoff time. Now, only about a half a dozen teams
survive.
Through this column in the past, I have suggested that the Mo-
hawks head into the Westem Ontario Athletic Association
league. However, as pointed out by Taylor, that may not be the
best of ideas.
"I've even thought about the WOAA but there is just as much
travel and you'd be restricted. I think you can only get (players)
from within a 15 -mile radius of Exeter."
That would limit the choices quite a bit. Mind you there are a
lot of decent hockey players in the area but unfortunately, I don't
think there am enough who want to put forth the kind of com-
mitment this would require.
Going out of town, up to London and beyond to get players
would have to continue. Sure, you wouldn't be able to walk
down main street and recognize them but that's always been the
case at least in the past five years I've been here.
So, do you want a winning team or a local one? That no doubt
is the question the Mohawks brass will have to discuss in the
next couple of weeks at their meeting.
And how is the team set financially?
Well, they held their annual elimination draw although it was
in conjunction with the Junior 'D' Hawks. The slo-pitch tourna-
ment might still be on, which is also an annual fund-raiser.
"The entry fee was paid for this year which we didn't use. We
are in the same financial state we would be at the start of any
year, if not better," said Taylor.
Getting back Sunday night ice time is one problem, finding a
coach is another. Coach -GM and assistant GM John Pryde have
gone on to produce a very successful junior club in town and
them returning to the Mohawks is not yet known.
"There's no use in having a coach if we don't have an ex-
ecutive," said Taylor.
I miss Sunday night's with the Mohawks. Mind you, I have re-
placed my fix with the juveniles but I enjoyed senior hockey and
so did a lot of others - I hope it comes back.
