Hibbert citizens looking to honour late Senator Public help is needed to help honour one. of Hib- bert Township's native sons. HIBBERT - William Goulding, who has a long record of public service, was born in Hibbert on April 14, 1878. He served as a federal MP from 1932 until 1949 when he was appointed to the Sen- ate. Bob Hamilton of Hibbert said recently that a plaque commemorating his contributions is hope- fully in the works if enough money can be collected from local citizens Golding is not eligible to have his contributions marked with a government -issued plaque because he was never a cabinet minister,a He has been described as Prime Minister Mack- enzie King's "right hand man" during his stay in Ot- tawa. Hamilton said it would be a nice gesture to rec- ognize one of Hibben's famous persons, especially with the township's Sesquicentennial celebrations slated for 1996. The committee is also hoping that Golding's grave site can be landscaped is case Prime Minister Jean Chre'tien makes an appearance during Hibbert's historic weekend. "Any contribution will help," Hamilton said. Golding , who is buried in Staffs cemetery, was a member of Seaforth council from 1916 until 1921; Mayor of Seaford) from 1921 until 1929; chairman of Seaforth PUC 1921 to 1936, chair- man of Scott Memorial Hospital 1924 until 1945. He was elected to Parliament in 1932, re-elected 1935, 1940 and 1945 before being appointed to the Senate four years later.
