Lumley clinic teaches
young pitchers not to
throw breaking balls
Exeter Minor Baseball will
be holding a meeting on
March 5 to look at future
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
HURON PARK - Outside it's cold, real cold.
Pulling on a baseball glove and throwing 70 mile -
per -hour fastballs may be the furthest thing from
most people's minds but not those who are par-
ticipating in Mike Lumley's baseball clinic.
Being conducted at the Huron Park Recreation
Centre until March 14, the clinic emphasizes pitch-
ing but there is also a lot of other areas to work on
like infielding and hitting off a tee.
"In the winter I do all pitching but there is only so
many drills you can teach them. You don't want
them bored so you give them some fun stuff to do,"
said Lumley.
A member of the London AA Tigers, a pitcher
who made it all the way to the Detroit Tigers 40 -
man roster and a graduate of the Eastern Michigan
Cameron Becker gets ready to swing during the
Mike Lunley clinic held in Huron Park.
University baseball program, Lumley doesn't be-
lieve in teaching young pitchers how to throw
"junk".
He says that young pitchers, those between the
ages of 9 and 12 should learn how to throw strikes
and work on their speed a little bit long before
learning how to throw the breaking ball.
"I work on their mechanics, their arm strength.
The velocity will come. I don't teach them any junk
at that age, I don't believe in it. I've seen too many
kids throwing breaking balls at 9,10,1 1,and 12 years
old and by the time they're 13,14, or15, their arms
are blown out."
Lumley said he saw a successful major bantam
(14 year-old) team last year that never threw break-
ing balls at all.
Baseball in Canada: Hockey is Canada's best
sport and while we continue to send more players
into the profmional baseball ranks, a lot has to
change before more hall players get the chance to
chase their dream.
"It's getting much bigger," said Lumley of the in-
terest in ball in this country. I don't think it will be
as big as hockey."
There are several key ingredients which are miss-
ing.
"We don't have the coaching ability, we don't
have the facilities. We don't have scholarships at the
university level and we don't have high school ball."
Registration corning up: The Exeter Minor
Baseball Association is getting ready for the 1995
season and it appears as though registration costs
will have to be increased.
Gary Hartman indicates that due to a debt of
about $2,700 the cost of registration will go up
slightly. However, the EMBA has many fund-
raising ideas on the go but are looking for vol-
unteers to help get those going.
Registration dates are set for Saturday, March 11
at the South Huron Recreation Centre from 10 a.m.
to 1 p.m. and again on Wednesday, March 15 from
7-10p.m.
Costs are as followed: tykes, $40; rookie, $60;
mosquito, $70; bantam, $80; midget, $90 and juve-
nile -junior which is not part of the EMBA, $95.
While there are increases, Hartman says they fall in
line with other communities.
The EMBA is looking for volunteers and ex-
ecutive members. Anyone wishing to help out are
welcome to attend a meeting at the Riverview Es-
tates Recreation Centre on Sunday at 2 p.rn.
Baseballs future: The Ontario Baseball Associa-
tion it seems, is going through some dramatic
changes.
At the 1994 annual convention, the OBA was giv-
en permission to change its name to Baseball On-
tario and now there is a drive to look to the future
with what is being called Baseball 2000.
Back in November, over 200 participants sat
down and looked at the future by addressing the
seven main areas which arc coaching, umpiring,
communications, sport development, organizational
development, human resources, facilities and equip-
ment.
The next step is to set up sub -committees for
these groups and have co-chairs.
"This is a great start for all of us and there are a
lot of people who have made this a success. I look
forward to the results during the next ycar," said
president Bernie Soulliere through the newsletter.
