Junior hoopers caught in
a H -P political shuffle
The Panthers played and
lost to Northwestern but
will still head to WOSSA

EXETER - Confused - you will be if you follow
high school basketball in the counties of Huron and
Perth.
Last Tuesday, South Huron coach George McE-
wen found out his junior Panthers wouldn't be play-
ing Stratford St. Mike's, instead it was the Stratford
Northwestern Huskies who hit the wooden floor in
Exeter the following day.
McEwen also found out the game wasn't the Hu-
ron -Perth Conference final because apparently there
is no such thing.
Apparently the conference basketball constitution
needs to be re -written and last week it almost had a
major adjustment to it on the spot.
"It was going to be ripped up and thrown away,"
said McEwen after the Panthers were beaten 72-46
by the visiting Huskies. "It was going to be im-
proved, however the president decided it was a
wrong move to abandon the constitution."
Next year, it is expected the first place team in
Huron, in this case the Panthers, and the top team in
Perth would go automatically to the WOSSA tour-
nament.
The purpose of the game, and a similar matchup
which pitted Goderich against St. Mikes, was to de-
termine three teams which would go to WOSSA lat-
er this week in Tillsonburg.
McEwen agrees re -writing the constitution and
thus eliminating the format which took place last
week, is a good idea.
"It makes winning your league and your playoffs more
meaningful," said McEwen whose team recently beat
Goderich to win the Huron title.
Despite the loss to the Huskies, South Huron will head
to the WOSSA tournament, however, the method of
seeding is still uncertain. It looks as though the Panthers
will be the eighth ranked team.
"As far as I know they're (WOSSA) not going to allow
us to send our (Huron -Perth) seeds. They're going to
seed the tournament themselves. They are going to de-
cide where everyone belongs."
Fall behind early: Last Wednesday against the
Huskies, South Huron fell behind 17-6 after eight min-
utes but they woke up a bit early in the second quarter
when Trevor Boersma was fouled while scoring and
went to the line to hit the free throw. Boersma led the
Panthers in scoring wit :10 points.
The Panthers got into early foul trouble as Mark Bell
had two against him in the first quarter and Luke Sims
picked up his third early in the second quarter.
Neil Revington came off the bench for Sims and add-
ed some spark as he drove to the hoop for two and later
ripped the mesh for a three -pointer. Revington who
along with Jeff Mason had eight points each added an-
other long -ranger late in the game.
NG,thwestern dominated on the hoards throughout the
game and it didn't help the Panthers as Jeremy Va-
nesbroeck was unable to play due to a sprained ankle.
"Our guys arc not aggressive on the boards," said
McEwen. "They don't earn their spot. Certainly we
know what we have to fix before WOSSA. Whether or
not we can, that's up to the guys."
South Huron burst out of the dressing room at the half
and cut an 18 -point deficit down to 10, less than two
minutes into the second half.
Jeff Dietrich had 20 points for the Huskies while
Wayne Racher netted 14.

Hockey Panthers in final
They now take on the Redmen
EXETER - Back-to-back wins
against Goderich last week has lift-
ed the South Huron District High
School Panthers into the Huron -
Perth high school hockey cham-
pionship.
Last Tuesday at the South Huron
Recreation Centre, the host Pan-
thers won 5-2 to sweep the four -
point series in two straight. Scoring
for the winners were Dwight
Gingerich, Blair Moir, Trevor Tay-
lor, Chris McDonald and Ryan
Shantz.
The day before in Goderich, it
was a closer 4-3 win South Huron
win as Ben Armstrong, Gingerich,
Geoff Mayer and Rob Kobayashi
scored.
"The game on Monday, Jason
Glavin played goal and he made
three or four super saves. 1 think he
won the game for us," said Panthers
coach Dave Cox.
With the win, South Huron were
sent into the H -P finals against
Clinton's Central Iluron Redmen.
During the two regular season
meetings of these two teams, the
Redmen won 4-3 back on De-
cember 2 and 6-4 on January 31.
Central Huron advanced to the fi-
nals after a tough series which saw
them eliminate Wingham's F.E.
Madill 5-4 in double overtime on
Monday afternoon.
Yesterday (Tuesday), the first
game was played in Exeter with the
second scheduled for Thursday in
Clinton at 2 p.m. If necessary a
third game will be held in Clinton
at 2 p.m.

the weather," said Revington of the
Bombers arriving at the game with
plenty of time to spare.
Belmont may have gotten to the
South Huron Recreation Centre ear-
ly but it was the Hawks who were
well prepared as Robinson got his
first of the playoffs with a low shot
past Ian Burt. Sean McCann made
it 2-0 when he was set up by lin-
emates Kennedy and Jeff Glavin
and it was 3-0 when Cousineau had
lots of time to walk in.
A shorthanded goal by McCann
just 6:59 into the game and the
Hawks had a somewhat surprising
huge 4-0 lead.
Burt was yanked in favour of
John Longe but it didn't matter who
Trevor Slao1bott, second from right, Is congratulated by teammates Chris Kennedy, Jamie Cor-

the Hawks scored on as they were
up 9-2 after two periods.
"He (Burt) goes down a lot and
he butterflys. Sometimes those
guys look great and sometimes they
look poor when the shot gets up on
them," said Revington.
JAI the Exeter end of the rink,
Darien Kints, who got the win on
Saturday, started but after two pe-
riods gave way to Brian Knight.
McCann had the hat trick for the
winners while veteran defensman
Cornish had a great offensive game
with a goal and four assists. He was
later ejected for fighting.
Also scoring were Robinson and
Cousineau with two each with sin-
gles from Livermore and Farquhar
who had a goal and three set ups
each. In his first game as a Hawk,
defenseman Trevor Shadbolt had
the other tally.
"He moves the puck welt and he
moves into the play. He can be an
offensive defenseman," said Rev-
ington of Shadbolt.
