According to Cook's quality assurance manager Gerry Upshall, "ISO is an International Standard for Quality Assurance and Quality Management. Cook's registration is recognized by all the major countries in the world." GREAT PRICES L MAKE IT EASY ON YOUR BACK POCKET Replace that old, worn-out tractor seat! Get comfortable! Mai 1111 1.aaLtlPIILatfn tilLa!!11 An ISO standard does not define product quality. Registration provides Cook's customers with the knowledge and con -1 fidence that our quality system will deliver the quality and service required by contract. Cook's quality system involves nineteen elements which to name a few, include procedures for Management, Purchasing, Inspection and Testing, Process Control, Handling, Storage, Packaging and Record Keeping. ISO terminology defines Cook's as a supplier, to whom we sell to as a customer and to whom we buy from as a subcontractor. A producer is con- sidered a subcontractor and is as important to Cook's system as any other type of subcontractor. However, Cook's registration will not create any extra requirements for the producer to meet contract requirements and assure product quality. It is not going to be any easier to deliver to any other business than it is to Cook's. The only additional requirement at this time involves contracts where the right to verify quality at the subcontractors (producer) premises is stat- ed rather than assumed. t One element that is of major importance to the food sector is Food Safe- ty and this element could be appliedISO under the requirement for ver- ification of producer (subcontractor) t ality. Food Safety is a primary concern with Cook's and its importance cannot be overstated. There are places such as Europe where Government Legislation requires producers to document, and in the case of the State of California, not only document but register in advance their planting intentions including the levels and kinds of pesticides and feitilizers they intend to use that grow- ing year. Although, at this time, there is no legislated requirement in Canada to record this information, it is a sound management practice which many al- ready do. This kind of pro -active plan was taken by our industry when C.P.I.C. (Crop Protection Institute of Canada) developed a plan to upgrade all chemical storage facilities to assure safe storage and handling of pes- ticides. The key for demonstrating management practices, whether it is the farm- er or it is addressing an ISO Standard, is documentation and records. Today the farm has to be well managed to survive and part of man- agement is obviously good records. However, food safety practices are generally overlooked from a recording point of view but these records are very important for demonstrating to customers that Canada's food is safe. A few safety procedures that should be considered critical and should be recorded are : 1. Searching for glass in areas of a field that borders a road. 2. Cleanup of equipment and good judgement in the selection of a transport that has not been used for livestock. 3. Using only those pesticides registered to be used for the crop being grown. 4 .Verification that pesticide application rate did not exceed recommended rate. What does ISO mean to a producer? As an ISO supplier, Cook's are responsible to provide the information necessary to select crop protection products to safely produce a crop. As a supplier the ISO registration would provide confidence that prod- uct, such as seed, produced by Cook's would meet specific requirements. ISO registration demonstrates Cook's commitment to improve and to provide the people buying our product satisfaction by assuring quality will meet their requirements. ISO registration gives a company credibility world wide which will open new markets and provide for Cook's and ultimately you the producer, in- creased marketing opportunities. What ISO does not mean? It does not mean we are obligated to accept or ship anything other than quality we are presently handling. We will continue to receive product as in the past. In addition to the IS09002 project of which we are very proud, Cook's looks forward to working with you on a number of new concepts for the future. 55 Orfs. JIEl 25 kl erving Your Growing Needs.
