Ice motor
cle racing concludes at Winter Carnival
Th - MA . was pleased

Lucan's Tim Bitz (6) speeds around the track in Grand
Bend as he warmed up for an event.

GRAND BEND - They were back on the track in Grand Bend on
the weekend and although the number of spectators were not as high
as organizers would have liked, the Canadian Motorcycle Associa-
tion is still calling Fire on Ice a success.
"It was not what was hoped for. The area had just been through
some bad weather. h was a nice introduction," said CMA general
manager Marilyn Bastedo.
The event was, a bit of an experiment and it was part of the Grand
Bend Winter Carnival. Usually the winter festival has sled dog rac-
ing but this year the sponsors cancelled for that so it opened the
gates for the studded ice racing.
"Ice racing championships have been held since 1973 but never in
Grand Bend. Ed Krohm has been involved with the CMA for many
years," said Bastedo.
Krohm was the Grand Bend organizer and he spent many long
cold nights out on the track getting it just right. While the ice could
have been a little thicker, Bastedo was nevertheless very pleased
with the efforts of the local organizers.
"The track was excellent. Design wise it was probably the best we
ever had," said Bastedo.
The first weekend of the Winter Carnival saw the races cancelled
after bad weather. Some qualifiers and test runs were done and the
track was broken in a little but no races were held.
"Usually the riders can see but the officials have to be able to see
the comers. That's why it was cancelled."
Studded ice racing takes a lot of courage and stamina as whipping
around the track at high speeds is very difficult without the obstacle
of ice.
In the past there has been more riders and events were held on
lakes and at horse tracks but Bastedo says it is dieing a bit and for
this season anyway, there won't be more races.
"Unfortunately, that's it for Ontario. We used to have a full season
that would be two months long."
There was racing this past weekend and a couple of riders from
the Lucan area did well.
In the novice 600 cc category, Lucan's Tom Bitz just missed tak-
ing home both the provincial and national titles. In the provincial
class, he finished second to Eric Bock of Courtice while gunning for
the national crown, Bitz was second to Bock again.
Bitz finished fourth in the novice 250 cc provincial class while
Paul Gilmour, also of Lucan was fifth. Gilmour had a good outing as
well as he was third behind Bitz and Bock in the novice 600 cc na-
tional class.
Other results from the two local riders saw Gilmour finish fifth in
the novice 250 cc national class while Bitz was close behind in sev-
enth spot.
Provincial winners on the weekend were Oshawa', Kevin Jones in
the provincial novice 250 cc class, Kurt Biegger from Hamilton was
first in the intermediate 250 cc group and also first in the 600 cc
class.
Jones won the national novice 250 cc category while Biegger won
both the national intermediate 250 cc and 600 cc groups.
Annual increase bumps Exeter ice to $80
EXETER - Tack on another two
bucks for ice rental per hour at the
South Huron Recreation Centre.
At its recent monthly meeting,
the rec board decided to increase
some of its rates, as it does annual-
ly and ice rental during prime time
in 1995 will now be $80, up from
$78.
"Everything usually goes up eve-
ry year. We generally look at things
two to five percent," said rec di-
rector Lynne Farquhar.
Ice time during the day, that is if
you can get your team out of school
for an hour, is $44, up from $42.
"Our ice surface revenue is doing
well. It's been well used," said Far-
quhar. •
Gold medal for
Exeter precision
team in Durham
DURHAM - It . was gold
medal time for the Exeter Jun-
ior Classics as they won the
Central Ontario Precision In-
vitational Competition held in
Durham on the weekend.
There was a total of 58 teams
participating in . this years
event, 18 in the junior 'B' level
which Exeter .was grouped in
to. Preliminary competition be-
gan at 9:55 a.m. which saw Ex-
eter go up Against seven teams.
After this round, Exeter was
second which advanced them
to the gold final. Here they
skated against Port Stanley,
Chatham, Sutton and District,
Aylmer, Tillsbnburg, Hespler,
Fergus -Elora, Bluewater and
Sarnia.
When the judges had tallied
their scores it was Exeter bring-
ing home the gold.
It was the first competition of
the year for the Exeter Juvenile
Mini -Classics and there were
19 teams in the Juvenile 'B' di-
vision.
Exeter was on the ice for 8
a.m. on Saturday and after the
first round were eighth overall.
They were pitted against 10
teams in the final round as they
were matched with Mis-
sissauga, Sutton, Chatham,
Sunparlour, Pelham, New-
market, Fergus -Elora, Hespler
and Mount Forest.
Exeter, in their first competi-
tion, brought home a fifth place
finish.
It was a hectic weekend for
the teams as they battled snow
storms to get home with the
news. Next competition is
March 4 in Chatham.
Coaches are letting the ice con-
vener know of cancellations and
there isn't a lot of open ice that is
not being filled quickly.
Other rates for 1995 at the rec
centre include; $5 per registrant for
ball diamonds and soccer fields,
$250 for ball tournaments, $31 for
games when they use lights and
$18 without lights, the lawn bowl-
ing club will pay a $575 rental fee
for the season, $720 for the tennis
courts, and the pool rental will be
$40.
Additional sources of revenue for
the rec centre include the Optimists
Home and Garden Show, $1,765
and the Exeter Fall Fair, $1,100.
There will be somewhat of a Toss of
revenue this year ' as Heywood's
Auctions no longer uses the rec
centre and between the floor rental
and the concession booth this could
be a loss of $16,000.
Other issues: The rec centre is
keeping a close eye on parking as
both the high school and public
school are using the lot. Reports of
high school students speeding and
Ross wins
again at
squash event
EXETER - The South Huron
Racquet and Fitness Club held its
winter squash tourney recently in
which, once again, Mark Ross took
the winning spot for the 'A' divi-
sion. 'B' division winner was Leo
Krahn.
Highlight of the day was the con-
siderable talent of Andrew Mount,
a 14 -year-old player from the
County Club of Clinton. While he
lost his first round match against
Mark Ross, he showed his skills
and superior fitness in his subse-
quent matches against Peter Darbi-
shire and Ken Farquhar.
Winter league play has been
steady, with 16 players participat-
ing, and several new members have
recently joined, either as novices or
as experienced players who are re-
visiting squash as a fitness activity.
According to club co-ordinator, Ja-
mie Dougall, several ladies have
shown interest in the sport too. A
ladies league night is being
planned.
Players and spectators are en-
couraged to participate in the
spring squash tournament, planned
for April 8, 1995. For information,'

NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION
HIGHWAY 23
MEDWAY CREEK BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
THE STUDY
The Ministry of Transportation has completed a study to replace
the Highway 23 bridge at the Elginfield Drain and Medway
Creek, to .ated 0.8 km north of the junction of Highway 23 and
Highway 7.
With the completion of the study, the Ministry is now proposing
to:
- remove the existing bridge and construct a single -lane, signal-
ized detour, using a Bailey bridge along the west side of the
highway to temporarily route traffic around the work area;
- construct a new bridge and approaches, including 'a grade
raise along the existing highway (maximum increase of 1.0 m),
paved approach shoulders, catchbasins at all four approach
corners, barrier curb and single beam guide rail; and
- restore and re -grade adjacent highway drainage ditches as re-
quired upon removal of the roadside detour.
THE PROCESS
This study has followed an approved planning process. Follow-
ing contacts with extemal agencies and the public, and review
within the Ministry, it has been determined that this project will
not result in any significant detrimental environmental effects.
A letter outlining this and the reasons has been filed with the
Ministry of the Environment and Energy. If, after April 6, 1995,
significant concems have not been identified, further documen-
tation 'will not be prepared and construction may start without
further notice.
