High school sports - basketball playoffs are heating up
EXETER - Jason Hodgson
scored four goals, two of 'them
shorthanded to pace the South Hu-
ron Panthers to a 6-5 win over vis-
iting St. Marys in high school hock-
ey action last Tuesday.
Also scoring for the winners,
who were coming off a tough loss
to Central Huron were Dwight
Gingerich and Geoff Mayer. Jason
Glavin picked up the win in net.

one got into this game which saw
the two teams exchange three -
pointers in the third quarter.
In midget action on Wednesday,
the Panthers were ahead 16-2 at the
end of the first quarter and led 26-
13 at the break. Dave Robilliard
and Paul Gregus led the way with
10 points each while Christian
Stucktess, Kris Leppington and
Heath Palen all netted six each.
On Thursday the basketball
teams travelled to Clinton and
while the seniors and midgets beat
host Central Huron, the juniors
weren't as fortunate.
Monday the juniors were sched-
uled to host Wingham's F.E. Madill
in a Huron semi-final game but that
was postponed because of bad
weather. The same goes for the sen-
ior as they were supposed to take
on Madill.
The winner of the games will
take on Goderich who seem to be
the powerhouse in all three divi-
sions this winter.
Thursday the midgets will host
the Huron Conference tournament
beginning with Seaforth taking on
Central Huron at 9 a.m. followed
by South Huron against F.E. Ma-
dill.

VANASTRA - Wednesday and
Thursday the curling teams trav-
elled to the Vanastra Curling Club
where they participated in the Hu-
ron bonspiel.
The boys finished second behind
Central Huron and will head to the
Huron -Perth event scheduled for
Thursday in Stratford.
South Huron's girls curling team
was not as fortunate as they fin-
ished third behind Madill and
Goderich and won't advance. The
Panthers lost in an extra end in the
semi-finals.
Hot streak continues as
Irish win seventh straight.
Lucan has just two games
left and are trying to move
up in the west standings

LUCAN - A slow start doesn't always mean a slow
finish.
Last Wednesday night in Lucan, the Irish battled
visiting Belmont Bombers to a 1-1 tie after the sec-
ond period but when the horn went after 60 minutes
it was a 4-1 win for Lucan.
Saturday in Belmont, the Irish made it two in a row
over the Bombers in OHA Junior Development
League action and seven consecutive wins as they
came out on top 7-5.
"I don't think Belmont changed their style. We've
been doing that (slow start) for the past three games,"
said Lucan co -coach Jeff Dalrymple after Wednes-
day's game. "We came out slow in the first and we
got better in the second."
After Belmont took a 1-0 lead, Lucan defenseman
Bryan Steifel tied it up with 48 seconds left in the
first frame. There was no scoring in the middle pe-
riod before the hosts exploded for three in the final
20 minutes.
The best scoring chance in the second was by Lu -
can when Steve Hudson went in alone but he was
stopped by Ian Burt.
•
"We had a lot of shots on them, their goalie played
pretty good," said Dalrymple of Burt.
Following a scoreless second, the Irish came to life
as Dave Lindberg went in on a breakaway and al-
though stopped, he helped set up what proved to be
the winning goal.
A couple of minutes after his attempt, he and vet-
eran Greg DePrest fed Hudson to make it 2-1.
Jeremy Jemec who had three points on the night,
let go with a shot from' the slot which seemed to
screen Burt and it was a two -goal cushion. With 39
seconds left in the game, Scott Riddell was all alone
at the side of the net and tapped one in.
"We're getting more shots. Usually we just waited
for the perfect pass. You're not going to score the
chincey ones unless you shot," said Dalrymple.
Steve Watson picked up his second straight win in
net and it was the second game in a row the veteran
only allowed one puck to get past him. He and Kny-
vet Carson have been rotating but Carson had been
sick the past week or so. •
"For a while he (Watson) had a couple of weak
games but with Knyvet there he knows he has to pick
1
k'
p his game," said Dalrymple.
Watson came up real big in the third period when.
th 3:17 left to play and the Irish up by two, he
made one save and then quickly got across the goal
line to grab a shot which bounced off the post and
into his glove.
Set combinations:
Wednesday. the Irish
had some set line
combinations which
the coaches seem to
like. DePrest was
with Lindberg and
Hudson while Rid-
dell, Jemec and roo-
kie George Stephens
are another solid trio.
"We have three
lines that stay the
same all the time,"
said Dalrymple.
Captain Steve Mat-
thews has been out
four games due to a suspension and prior to that he
Was on the number one line with Hudson and De-
Prest. It could be interesting to see, what happens
when he returns.
"He might get back onto that line or he might end
up on the third line. Right now we are using four
lines and tonight we had seven defensemen," said
Dalrymple.
Another scoring combination is veterans Jemec and
Riddell. Since Jemec returned from school and Rid-
dell has gotten healthy, they've been tough to keep
off the scoreboard.
Irish 7 Bombers 5
Saturday night in Belmont in a return game with
the Bombers, the Irish moved closer to fourth place
in the west division.
DePrst and Christian Criel had five -point nights as
DePrest scored four times and set up another while
Criel had one goal and four assists.
Also scoring for the winners were Soctt Riddell and
Dave Jenken. Riddell was speared in the throat but
should be alright for tonight's game.
Lucan will try and increase their winning streak to
eight games tonight when they host Mitchell in their
final regular season home game.
