AO - Tom Tom Smits and Don Burris, above, add up the score after a match at the Dashwood horseshoe courts. At right, Elgin Kipfer and Jack Gaiser show their horseshoe tossing abilities. 19 1 Clucks turn to clangs in Dashwood barn By Ross Haugh T -A Staff DASHWOOD - For more than 40 years the sounds of peep -peeps and cluck -clucks came from a barn in Dashwood owned by Jack Gaiser. Now those chickeny sounds have turned to clangs as horseshoes are heard rattling around iron stakes. Gaiser built the chicken barnin 1954 and raised laying hens and broilers until April of last year. In recent years the Dashwood farmer produced 10,000 broiler chickens five times a year. When he retired from the chick- en business in early 1994 he be- gan to think of what he could do with this Targe building. In dis- cussion with Elgin Kipfer, a very enthusiastic Dashwood horseshoe pitcher, they decided with some renovations horseshoe courts could be installed. In September work began to convert part of the barn to four horseshoe courts and they were ready to go a few weeks ago. Most Saturday afternoons the courts are filled with a dozen to 16 pitchers. Help in getting the facility ready came from enthusiastic horsehoe players from as far away as Grand Bend, Kippen, North- ville, Russeldale, Thedford, Wat- ford and Exeter. According to Gaiser one of the toughest chores was to break out some of the four inch cement floor in eight areas to allow the placing of the iron stakes to have the pitchers a target to aim at. A cement saw was supplied by Brian Kipfer and Gaiser obtained a hydraulic jackhammer to get through a wall and the dead sand which is necessary to keep the shoes from bouncing and rolling around came from the Babylon Line farm in Hay township owned by Don Bender. Others assisting in getting the horseshoe facility ready for its now every Saturday afternoon ac- tivities in addition to Gaiser, Bender and the Kipfers were Lee - land Desjardine, Laverne Daly, Alan Walper, Allan Turnbull, Ralph Koopman, Roy Becker and Lorne Becker. A sign has been placed, inside the barn indicating this horseshoe venture will be non-profit and en- couraging participants to make donations in an available cash box to help cover the owner's oper- ating expenses which include pro- pane, hydro and building taxes. Disposing of any monies donated above the actual expenses will be decided by the group involved. Allan Turnbull has been named secretary -treasurer. Special thanks go to John Mur- phy of Thedford and Bill Cole- man for their organizing the weekly tournaments and to George Brouwer for donating chairs. Elgin Kipfer said coffee is available each Saturday and port- able washroom facilities have been put in place. He added, " In the future we may have some food available." An open invitation is made to any and all horseshoe enthusiasts within a reasonable driving dis- tance of Dashwood. Gaiser says,A couple of weeks ago we had two ladies take part in our tournament and we certainly encourage more to come along." If anyone is interested in getting involved in these Saturday after- noon tournaments, they should call Jack Gaiser at 237T3453 or Elgin Kipfer at 237-3451. . When Gaiser is unavailable, El- gin Kipfer, Allan Turnbull and John Murphy will be in charge of the tournaments. i4Veloilic-.Privately pto korp liul'S w>,cd SDo fdt age , 4; 1 We eXPecl Yott Tos-- /) <, ft',.
