GRAND BEND - The roar of the
engines returns to Grand Bend this
weekend as both the Provincial and
National Motorcycle Ice Racing
championships will be held at the
Grand Bend Speedway Park.
As part of this year's Winter Car-
nival, spectators will have the op-
portunity to see some of the best
racers in the country over two
weekends of action.
Building the track on the site of
where there was great auto racing
this past summer, has not been an
easy task for organizer Ed Krohm
and other volunteers.
"We're still building the track,"
Krohm told the Times -Advocate
Monday morning. "We're building
the ice up to the proper thickness."
Like many other activities at the
carnival, the weatherman has to co-
operate. Krohm said that if it's not
cold enough to make enough ice,
the races will be postponed one
week.
"The warm weather we had
pushed us into a little tighter time
frame for rebuilding."
Krohm noted that while the ice
may be thick enough for the mo-
torcycles, it also has to be able to
support the maintenance equipment
which will be out on the track. -
While he doesn't know who will
be coming to Grand Bend, a couple
of racers that have confirmed are
John Kehoe the top speedway ice
racer and George Johns one of the
better standard ice racers.
"The speedway bikes are quite
unique they have no transmission.
They run on alcohol. There is no
suspension on the back," explained
Krohm.
