To kick off the program the play, Beating Bully O'Brien, was pre- sented by grade five and six stu- dents on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening. The play dem- onstrates the effectiveness of peace- able solutions. Beating Bully O'Brien examines the inner conflicts of a young boy who is having difficulty dealing, with a bully at school who happens to be a girl. Rocky is a pacifist at 'heart but feels pressure from his fa- ther and peer to deal with the bully by hitting back. "I'm a pacifist, please don't hate me," said Rocky. Rocky tries everything from pay- ing his body-building sister to beat up the bully to skipping school. He is embarrassed about his un- willingness to use violence as a so- lution to his problem. Rocky's friend Daniel Lu acts tough but also is really a pacifist at heart, " 1 just thought that was the way Canadian boys are supposed to act." In the end, Rocky and the bully, Catherine O'Brien (Tink) forge a close friendship when he helps save her from her older brother who uses her as a punching bag. The play deals effectively with the issues violence and peer pre - sure. It left the audience with a pos- itive outlook in an increasingly vi- olent world. The program at Usborne will help students develop skills to resolve conflict peacefully. Grade five and six students have re- ceived training to help their young- er peers deal with conflicts at school. Rocky Ryan at right, played by Leigh Holdsworth, struggles to find a non-violent solution to his problem with a school bully. His friend Daniel Lu, at left, played by Karen Passmore tries to help him think of way out of his dilemma. The play "Beating Bully O'Brien" helped to kick off the peacemaker program at Usborne school last Wednesday and Thursday. Monte Carlo night The Lions Club had a good turnout for the evening.
