Carroll, Deflruyn MVP all-stars
The north whipped the south at the annual Shamrock League classic
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
ST. MARYS - While the score did read 4-2 for the North
All -Stars it should have read Exeter Legionnaires 4, South
All -Stars I.
Saturday afternoon in St. Marys, Exeter had seven
players on the North team which beat the South in the an-
nual Shamrock Hockey League All-Star game.
With a couple of teams busy at the Silver Stick Tourna-
ment, north coach Paul Overholt from Exeter added three
more of his players, Chad Dalrymple, Greg Geoffrey and
David Marshall. Already on the team were captain Dave
Farquhar, Cam Dougall, Luke Sims and goalie Joey Bi-
erling.
Farquhar had a goal while Sims had an assist and Bi-
erling only allowed one goal in a period and a half of play.
Also scoring were Ilderton's Paul McQueen who added two
assists.
The Most Valuable Player for the north was centre Ryan
Carroll of Lucan who had one assist.
Down 1-0 in the second period after a scoreless first, Car-
roll said the north was told by the Exeter coaches not to
panic about being down by a goal.
"The coaches said we're in this game and we can beat
these guys," said Carroll who received a new stick for his
efforts.
Although there were only four minor penalties handed
out in this game, it was physical as there were several good
body checks dished mit by both sides.
"I didn't think there would be a lot of contact. I thought it
would be more of a finesse game with all-star players," said
Carroll.
There were several junior hockey coaches at the game
taking a look at some of the prospects. Among those was
former Lucan Irish coach Ken Needham, now head coach
of the London Junior 'B' Nationals.
Needham, like Carroll, noticed there was a fair amount of
body contact.
"I was surprised. Even at the end of the buzzer there was
a couple of shots, I don't know why," said Needham as he
watched the action during the bantam game.
He spotted a .couple of players he liked in the bantam
game including McQueen and Chad Greenlee of Lucan.
And what are Junior 'B' hockey coaches looking for now
when they go shopping for future talent? Surprisingly it's
not size.
"I'm looking
for the best
hockey players
around. It
doesn't matter
to me how big
they are as long
as they can play
the game."
Needham also
said it is im-
portant to be
able to move
without the
puck, in other
words, play po-
sitional.
One problem
junior teams
have is getting
players to move
or commit to
the long com-
Exeter's Joey BIeding
mute, in Needham's case, to London.
"With bantams, if you can get them young, can be with
you for a couple of years."
In the midget game, neither Exeter RSD Generals goalies
Mike Schwindt or Jason Glavin allowed a goal in a 5-1 win
for the north over the south side.
Even more impressive was Generals' high scoring for-
ward Marty DeBruyn who had two goals and was named
the Most Valuable Player for the north. DeBruyn who start-
ed the year with the Exeter Hawks, will be a factor in the
Generals bid for an OMHA title.
Also turning in fine performances for the north were De-
Bruyn's linemates, Dan Taylor and Chris McDonald also
from the Generals.
Exeter's Marty DeBruyn named MVP.

soccer tourney
HURON PARK - It was certainly interesting to watch and even more
so to play.
Saturday, seven teams competed in the South Huron Indoor Masters
Soccer Tournament at the Huron Park Recreation Centre.
Winning the two -pool event was London Riccardi's as they topped
Slavia 4-1. Slavia-had a few Exeter players on it including Joe Martens.
The local team, called the Mongrels lost 3-0 in the consolation final.
"It's the first time we've done a masters tournament," said organizer
George McEwan. "There seems to be more of these than I thought."
While masters tournaments are usually for those who are 35 years -old
and more, McEwan decided to make it a 30 -and -over event.
"It made it a little more attractive," he said.
The Mongrels lost their opening game 5-2 to Slavia, bounced back to
beat Durham 3-2 before advancing to the consolation final with a 2-0
win against the Nationals from Seaforth.
McEwan announced that another indoor tournament is being planned
for February 18.

Coaching tip:
Bench management
Are you a good bench manag-
er?
Bench management is your
ability to organize activities
during a game and is an exten-
sion of effective pre -game plan-
ning.
Bench management begins
with establishing clear roles for
all support staff. Thc Head
Coach must be in complete
charge of the bench and players
and makc all final decisions,
while Assistant Coaches and
other staff act in supportive
roles.
Bench responsibilities will
vary depending on the strengths
of your support staff. Thc Head
Coach can take full responsibil-
ity for changing lines, or dele-
gate authority for handing de-
fence or forwards to assistants.
Whatever you decide, ensure
everyone knows their role.
Here are some suggestions:
• supervise your team during
the warm-up, ensuring that all
players complete proper warm-
up routines and goaltenders are
warmed -up with safe shM.s of
increasing difficulty
• use rink diagrams for quick,
visual explanations
• remain positive, relaxed and
in control: your players will re-
flect your personality
• only the Head Coach or cap-
tains should address officials,
and this must be done in a con-
trolled, professional manner
• ensure players arc ready for
all line changes and see that all
players receive fair and equal
ice time
• never contradict support
staff, it only confuses the
players: address support staff
individually after the game, if
necessary
• all individual and team feed -
hack should be positive and
specific
The way your players per-
form and conduct themselves is
a reflection of your bench man-
agement skills.
