But maybe you don't know where to start or NOV to plan it. Here's the scoop. For general winter tourism and event information, make your first call to 1 -800 -ONTARIO (toll free). This Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Recreation information line can answer your basic questions and pro- vide you with guides to places, lodgings and events to help narrow your options. Then call Ontario's Snowmobiling Hot Line, 1 -800 -263 -SLED (toll free) for snowmobiling information and brochures on your areas of in- terest. It helps if you have one or two specific destinations and a hol- iday timetable already in mind. Don't overlook your home region in this sear*. After all, some of the best trails and tours might be in your own backyard. Be sure to ask for a 1995 TOP Trail Map as a tour plan- ner. Finalize your destination by calling the appropriate regional tourism office at the phone number listed on their brochure to verify details and ask for more informatiorf:SThen call the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) at 705/739-7669 and ask for the names and phone numbers of the local snowmobile clubs. Don't be afraid to call the club contact to ask area specific questions, snow and trail condi- tions, staging areas, trail connections and for local maps. Based on your research, decisions and flexibility, either make ad- vance reservations or simply take a list of probable lodgings and res- taurasits with you to play it by ear as you snowmobile. But I'd advise calling ahead each morning to make reservations for that night as many locations are becoming too busy to accommodate ride -in trade. Ask at each overnight stop about the next day's proposed route to de- termine if your plans, distances, fuel stops and arrival times are re- alistic. The information gathering process should make you a knowledge- able, prepared, confident and relaxed rider. But what if you're still un- comfortable setting out on your own? Maybe you just don't want the hassle of trying to do it you self. Perhaps your plans include family. Or what if you're a novice anting to try your first snowmobiling hol- iday? There are several d options. Resorts Ontario (1-800-363-7227, toll free) has a dandy brochure list- ing resorts specializing in snowmobiling holidays. In addition to full service facilities and amenities, these properties can often arrange ren- tal sleds and gear, guides and tours. By riding out of one central loca- tion each day, you have access to new trails and all the comforts of home too. Alternately, "package" tours are available whereby an number of es- tablishments on a trail system get together to market themselves as group. Usually based on a circle tour (starting and ending in the same place), two with brochures are: 'Round Algonquin Park (RAP), contact 613/756-2324 or Valley SnowTour, contact 613/756-2646. Depending on your time, each tour can run three to seven days. You're on your own during the days ride, but wit resZwations, are expected each night at participating lodgings oute. For the more adventurous, there's a unique, three day expe ' nce called "Getting Back" (705/569-2933) that combines snowmobi ing, wilderness sur- vival training and first class accommodation. But sometimes, you want to be wai - . on hand and foot. If so, then you should call one of Ontario's . y first-rate snowmobile tour com- panies. Each offers three to eight d • all-inclusive guided tours, com- plete with meals, lodgings and lugga ;e -carrying support vehicles for one fixed price. Similar in concept to aribbean packed holidays, you are usually responsible for your drinks, -s, sled and repairs, personal gear and trail permits. Sometimes getting here is included, sometimes not. Call for a brochure listing tour options and al .. sk for references - names and phone numbers of previous happy ca pers. Most oper- ators will also organize custom tours on request. ere's who to con- tact: Come Play in The Snow, 705/865-3176; C Mac Snowtours, 1-800- 225-4258 (toll free); Ontario Snowcruises, 905/473-9553; Snowmobile Tours Unlimited, 705/436-4537; Snowscape Venture Tours, 705/523- 2633. As you can see, there are lots of ways to put yourself on the snow this winter. And if all else fails, call a friend with a winterized cottage and mooch a free weekend. Both Exeter and Lucan will be well represented as Exeter sends a total of nine players and one coach while Lucan will have six players in two games which will match the north division against the south. Coaching the north bantam all- stars will be Paul Overholt, coach of the Exeter bantam Legionnaires. "At Christmas we were in first place and the team in first place gets to coach the all-star team," said Overholt. In the bantam game which begins at 4 p.m., followed by the midget game with a scheduled 5:30 start, Exeter will be represented by cap- tain David Farquhar, Cam Dougall, Luke Sims and goalie Joey Bi- erling. "He's (Bierling) got one of the best goals against average," said Overholt. Representing Lucan will be for- wards Chad Greenlee and Ryan Carroll along with iiefenseman Pat Conlin. While one reason to have an all- star game is to reward players for their accomplishments up to this point in the seasop, another is to give junior hockey scouts a chance to look at the better players. "Instead of going to one game where there is one guy, this way all the talent will be there," said Over- holt. "They get to see it all at once." Representing Exeter in the mid- get game will be Chris McDonald, Marty DeBruyn and Dan Taylor along with both goalies Jason Gla- vin and Mike Schwindt. Lucan will have Mike Bowerman, Steve Greenlee and Ryan Herbert.
