Sports enthusiasts shared tears and cheers in 1991

Every year is. an eventful one when it comes to
sports in the Times -Advocate's coverage area
and 1997 was no exception. The year was full of
teams realizing their -potential on the field,
extra to put them over the top. Here is a brief
rundown of just some of the happenings of note
in sport contained within the pages of the • T -A
over the past year. Thank you players coaches,
parents - and volunteers for providing an entertain-
ing '97 and good luck in '98.

•The Exeter bantam and midget minor hockey teams win their
- respective regional Silver Stick,tournaments, the bantams over.
Mitchell -and the midgets over Dresden. Both advance to the North
American finals, the bantams travelling. to Port Huron and.the midg-
ets to Sarnia: -.Both are eliminated at the next level.
•Jr. D Lucan Irish head coach resigns after pressure from the •
team's executive to start winning or else: Assistants Jason Bukala
and Bill Bourne take over and are still at the helm. .
•The Exeter and District U-7 and Petite 'A' ringette teams win gold
at Walkerton's Dave Cassidy Memorial Tournament.

and the juniors the bronze from the Niagara Invitational competition

•Exeter Minor Baseball's Gary Hartman named OBA coach of the
year at OBA Best Ever Baseball Clinic in Toronto.
•Fred Cook retires from Exeter Imperials fastball; the team eventu-
ally folds.
•The Exeter Tweens ringette team take home the gold from the
Richmond Hill tournament. • •
• •The South Huron junior girls volleyball team and senior boys bas-
ketballteam both make it to the Huron finals. Both are knocked out
by Wingham's F.E. Madill. • ' •
•The Exeter.Belle ringette team takes the silver at the Oshawa 'B'
tournament. , .

•Over 120 skaters'participate in the Exeter Figure Skating Club's
annual carnival.
, •The Exeter juvenile precision skating team wins the gold and the
juniors the bronze at the Sun Country competition in St- Thomas.
•Exetef's Elsie Kaupert competes in the Special Olympics in
Ottawa in solo skating..
•The Lucan Irish end their season by -losing to Seaforth in their.
semi-final series. Lucan protested game three when Seaforth used
an uncarded playet; Seaforth, players lined up for the traditional • -
handshaking 'at the end of thegame but refused_ to. make the
gesture.
*The Stephen Township peewee hockey team wins the WOAA cham-
pionship over Drayton.
•Hensall's Cara Gardner picked for the 'AAA' senior women's
hockey all-star game in Mississauga. •
•The Lucan midget hockey team captures the 'DD' Ontario title by
beating Mariposa Township in four games. Despite the title, Lucan
fails to, field a midget team in '97/98.
•The Exeter Jr. D Hawks are ousted from the playoffs by Seaforth
Crowned. Captain Shawna Rowe, centre, shows off hardware
presented to her after SHDHS's field hockey team won the
Huron -Perth championship over listowel at home. The
Panthers came up short at WOSSA, losing to Medway 1-0 in
the final. -

•The Exeter. A.E. midget Lions hockey team wins the Ontario title by
sweeping three games from Prince Edward County.
•The Exeter Curling Club hosts the Colts and Masters Ontario
championships.. ' .

and juniors Ryan Beattie and Dave.Robilliard play in the Huron -
Perth alt -stat games.
•Stephen Township hockey teams clean up in ailOntario competi-
tion: the novices win the 'DD'. WOSSA championship over Mildmay,
the Intermediate 11.girls win the 'D' Ontario title and Young Guns win
the 'B' WOAA championship.. • .
•The Exeter Juvenile Chiefs hockey team_wins.the 'CC' 0 •IA title
over Elmvale.
•The Stephen peewees are beat out by Madoc in the all -Ontario
finals.
•The Exeter Belle ringette team wins the Western Regional
Invitational tournament in Kitchener and the Huron-If/eft') title.
*The Exeter A.E. peewee hockey team wins the provincial 'B'
championship.
•Ross Hodgert and son AP both score 8 -enders in same curling sea-
son, a rare feat.••
*The South -Huron junior badminton team finishes second at the
Huron -Perth championships in Wingham. Junior doubles teams of
Nathan Zimmerman/Ryan Morrison and Jamie Reaburn/Jen•Regier
win respective. boys and girls titles; junior single Paul Gregus

• Kids, of Steel Triathlon hits Grand Bend with visit by Jesse's •
Jou'rney's Jesse and John Davidson.
. •Exeter's Al Horton and Clay Murray take silver at the regional
. Senior Games'in Sarnia.
•Ailsa Craig native' Sharon Amos heads off to Brandon, 'Man.. for
Canada Summer Games as member of Ontario's U-21 field hockey
team: the team brings home silver in August.

both titles in the same season.
•The Exeter Bantam and Senior Express hardball teams both win
league •titles and qualify for WOBA tournaments.

•Coop Juniors hardball coach Gary Hartman suspended indefinitely
from coaching in the OBA after he was caught using an overage and
uncarded player during their WOBA final versus Listowel.
•The Exeter hardball Bantams win WOBA but finish in the middle of
the pack at OBA final tournament; the Express peter out at OBAs.
•Cara Gardner wins a spot on Brown University's hockey team (in
Rhode Island), her next step to her goal of making the Canadian
Olympic team.•
*The Lieury Red Jets win the PMW '97 Squirt championship.
•The Dashwood Peewees make the OBA finals but lose to Wyoming
in final.
