Reeve Robert Benner put a glimmer back in their eyes and wheels. Benner said at last week's council meeting it was.too bad the are- na board chose not to pursue ,setting up an area specifically "for skateboards on the arena property because of the threat of being sued if someone hurt themselves. . "Liability is a huge excuse for bureaucrats to- use when something comes up they don't want to do," Benner said. "Why have insurance and not do anything?" ' At the Nov. 4 council meeting, Frank Cowan Co. Ltd.'s Jeff Cole- man told council the village's existing insurance policy with Cowan would cover any suits injuries sustained at a potential skateboard park might generate and premium won't go up but "our rec- ommendations are absolutely against those things:" But Benner was undeterred by Coleman's advice. He said it is probably safer for the teens to skate•on a facility specifically built for the activity rather than do their. thing on the village's sidewalks and streets. He pointed to Mitchell and Barrie who either huili skate - hoarding facilities or cordoned off an area in a parking lot for the 'boarders, though he noted Mitchell officials said if a,. suit is launched it will spell the end of any skateboarding facility. Councillor Glenn Silver said he fielded many requests on the elec- tion trail about what can the village do for parents who can't afford for their children to play hockey or other organized sports. Councillor -Reg Crawford, who sits on the arena board. said al- though the consensus at the board was against setting up a skate- board area at the arena, he would bring the issue back up at the next hoard meeting.
