Chiefs edge Langton 3-2
EXETER — The Exeter Juvenile Chiefs hung on at home Sat-
urday to slip by Langton 3-2.
Exeter drew first blood after 12:42 into the first when Marty de-
Bruyn made it 1-0 with Rob Morrisey and Paul Knight assisting.
The Chiefs made it 2-0 at 9:10 of the second stanza when Ben
Kaaks shot a loose puck into the top right corner of the net. Greg
Hendrick and Morrisey drew the assists.
The Chiefs regained a two goal lead in the third when John Rutten
scored from Hendrick and Dan Finkbeiner. Again Langton made it
interesting by scoring with 5:20 left in the game, but Exeter hung on
for the victory.
Chiefs manager John Rasenherg didn't dispute a bench minor
handed to his team at the end of the second period when the Exeter
players didn't return directly to their bench. Rasenberg said the rules
are clear for going to the bench at the buzzer.
Assistant coach Mike.Soldan said deBruyn continues to be a force
for the Chiefs with some solid defensive play plus the fact he can
put the puck in the next when needed. Soldan added Morrisey de-
livered some crushing checks on his Langton victims.
The Chiefs travel to Elora for their next game on Jan. 3.

Hawks back in first after besting the Irish
Nice try, but...Above: Lucan Irish forward Kevin Dunbar
makes a nice effort going towards the net but Exeter Hawks
goaltender Matt Fawcett denies him during Friday's game at
South Huron Rec Centre. At right: Lucan's Roy Davis tries to
get around Exeter's Dave Farquhar during the same game. Ex-

EXETER — The Exeter Jr. D
Hawks hockey club obviously
don't like second place because
they were there for only a few days
last week.
The Hawks shored up their first
place ranking by shutting out then
first place Lucan 4-0 at home Fri-
day and -besting host Thamesford 5-_
3 on Saturday.
eff Campbell, Jeff Glavin, Geoff
Mauer and Sean McCann scored
for Exeter with assists from Jason
Dunlap, Bill Hodge (2), McCann,
Ryan Chamncy, Chris MacDonald
and Glavin.. Matt Fawcett earned
the shutout between thc pipes for
Exeter.
The teams played a dull scoreless
first period with Exeter scoring two
in the second and two in the third,
the last goal while shorthanded.
• "After three losses it was im-
portant to turn it around before the
Christmas break," Hawks coach/
general manager Dave Revington
said. "We played with a little more
emotion and desire and I think that
made a difference."
Revington added Fawcett made
the big stops when called upon • -td
the entire team put in a good effort.
Irish co -coach Jason Bukala said
his team "just didn't play very
well" versus Exeter.
"if it wasn't for goalie Mike
Boyce it could've been a lot
worse," Bukala said.
He lauded Fawcett for a stellar
effort and said it must have been a
thrill for him to beat his former
team and coach — Fawcett played
for the Irish under Bukala last sea-
son and for London Oakridge Sec-
ondary School two years ago when
Bukala was coaching there.
The Hawks scored three goals in
the third on Saturday to pull out a
. vein on the road over. Thamesford
5-3.
Campbell led the Exeter attack
with two goals with singles from
Dan Taylor, Jeff Finkheiner and an
empty nester by Sean McCann.
Assists went to Glavin, goalie
Andy Glavin, Finkbeiner, Ryan
Freiter,,Ben McCann and Dave Far-
quhar.
Revington said the team was still
riding high from the shutout win
over Lucan.
"I think we played well in
spurts," he said. "Andy was pretty
strong in net Saturday when he
needed to be."
Revington added his rookie
players stepped their play up a
notch in the two weekend contests.
The Irish played well but still
came out on the short end of thc
stick with a 4-3 overtime loss to
host Belmont on Sunday.
"Belmont Arena is a'really tough
arena to play in," Bukala said. "It's
really small."
The Irish tied the game up with
Sr. boys lose tough one in OT
EXETER — The South Huron District High School senior boys
basketball team lost an overtime heartbreaker to Wingham Madill at
home last week 55-54. •
South Huron coach Terry O'Rourke said his team had many good
chances but had a "fairly cold day shooting."
Jeremy Van Esbroeck led Panther shooters with 19 points with
Ryan Beattie adding 15 point and Darryl Romphf shooting for 12
points.
The junior boys didn't fare as well versus Madill losing 66-36.
Ben Forrest and Nick Bailey led South Huron shooters with seven
points each.
In girls volleyball play last week, the junior girls defeated host
Central Huron 15-2, 5-15 and 17-16 but fell to Madill 6-15, 15-10
and 7-15. Coach Bob Robilliard said good serving and fine team
play was the difference in the Central Huron match with. The high-
light of the match came when Ann Marie Parsons made an excellent
dig off the net when the Panthers were down 14-11 to spark them to
the victory.
Krista Tuininga served for 12 straight points in South Huron's
lone win over Madill, Robilliard said, adding the two matches were
a good start to the season.
High school sports takes a break over the Christmas holidays with
boys basketball action resuming Jari. 7 when the Panthers travel to
Seaforth.
Girls volleyball returns in a big way for South Huron with two
league mini -tournaments the first week back: the Panthers host
Goderich and Seaforth on Jan. 6 and Central Huron and St. Anne's
on Jan. 8.
