And where there are sparks, well, you don't want your carpet anywhere near them. Many people are reluctant to .use their fireplaces because they worry about the sparks flying onto their rugs and burning a hole through them. You might he able to stamp out the smoldering arca in time, keeping a fire from spreading -hut then you're left with a ruined rug. Your first line of protection is a fireplace screen. Just as a porch -screen keeps out bugs, a fire screen keeps sparks from entering the room. - What about the times when the •screen is' open -when you're putting more wood on the • fire, for instance'' To start, you should have at least 45 centimetres (18 inches) of protective tile between the fireplace and the rest of the floor. That gives you a bit of breathing room. Of course, the sparks might be able to travel more than 45 centimetres (18 inches). Or you might drop some ashcs,.or lean the tip of one of your : fireplace implements on the rug. However, there are three simple ways -to Safeguard your rugs: - • First, you can buy • something called a hearth rug to place over your carpet near the fireplace. They come in all colours and arc made of 100 -percent wool. This material is naturally fire-resistant, as it burns only at a very high temperature: Even if the rug chars, it • won't burn. all the way through. Make sure that the rug, is 100 -percent virgin wool, not reprocessed wool. Look for the . woolmark • symbol • • You can also take a small section of your own. carpet material, left over from when it was installed; cut it to `size, and place it over the carpet near the fireplace. if a spark happens to burn into it, at least 'you haven't damaged the carpet underneath. • Third, you can treat the carpet with a • flame-retardant _spray. They're effective' and nontoxic. Ask your local hardware store or a fire protection, outfit if they stock any. Then treat the carpet in front of your fireplace, and safely fire away!
