COMMUNITY
Exeter Public School held a carol sing 'arid- food drive
on Wednesday. Students in the primary class brought
canned goods to the front of the gymnasfui» while the
rest of the school joined in Rudolph the Rednose Rein-
deer.

10 YEARS AGO •
December 22; 1987 - :A grade six student at Grand Bend Public
School received a real surprise when he received his mail Wednes-
day night:. Trent Steelingwerf learned he was a. winner in a contest
held in -conjunction with the 1988 Olympic Winter .Games `sched-
uled for Calgary. Trent was only one of 12 students in the province
of Ontario who had their artwork chosen to appear in Ensemble. an
Olympic publication.
When the Olympus flame is set aflame at Calgary in 1988. a num-
her of local people are likely to feel more than the usual chill run-
ning up their spines. They will each he running at least one kilomet-
re in Western Ontario carrying the Olympic torch. The runners will
he Jan Steele of Grand Bend; Rick Abel. Ailsa Craig: Carolyn Lan -
kin, Lucan and Tanya Deville; Centralia.
Just as Mary and Joseph spent the first Christmas in a place other
than their home town. a number of people in this area will be' spend-
ing their first Christmas. in Canada. Some traditions they will bring
to their. new abode. and others they. will adopt from their Canadian
neighbours. Among the newcomers will he the American monks
who established a Fransiscan monastery in the former St. Peter's
hurch on Highway 4. south of Exeter in June will he blending Ro-
man Catholic. Fransiscan and Polish traditions and customs in this
year's Christmas celebrations

Ing inspector Doug Triehner found himself in an unusual situation.
He was hustled up to Pat's Pet Shop to till in as a sales clerk so
councillor Pat Patterson could attend part et' the meeting.

Bob'Sharen of Grand Bend .is the vice-president.

December 20. 1957 - John Burke has opened a general. insurance
and real estate business in Exeter.

:December 22. 1952 - R.D'Jermyn will he a newcomer. to Exeter
councd when the. 1953 council is installed -next month. He replaces
Eugene Beaver who has resigned: . . - -
Monetta Menard who has operated a restaurant in. Grand Bend -in
.:.injunction with' her Exeter business -has purchased the lakefront
home of Dr. Kennedy at Grand Bend. It will he remodelled and
opened next summer for serving meals.
Mrs. Fred Switzer. was -re-elected president -of the Kirkton Horti-
cultural Society. There is a membership of 210. -

Decemher 21..1942. - Lance Bombadier Eric Carscadden of Pe-
tawawa. is. on furlough visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Garnet'
Miners of Ushorne•Township. •
Word was received this week by Mrs. Vernon Heywood that her
husband has been,promoted to the rank of Sergeant •Major.'He has
been overseas since 1941..
Mail early this Christmas is more than a slogan. h is an absolute
necessity. The impact of war conditions uphn postal service -has
heen terrific. -
The Exeter arena on Wednesday -evening proved anideal place for
holding Christmas entertainment by the teachers and pupils of Exet-
er Public School assisted by ,music. teacher W.R. Goulding. Every
child in -the. school participated. • . -

Decemher 22. 1917 -The Canadian Bank of Commerce has given
the staff of'their hanks a.1-0 percent bonus to celebrate the 50th anni-
versary of the hank.
Messrs. William Andrew. William Frayne. James Dearing.. Gor-
don Penhale and John Hunter attended Guelph Fair last week.
Miss Viola Penhale has been engaged by the Bank of Commerce
as a member of the gaff of the Exeter branch.
