Paul Carroll, Director of the . Huron County •Board of Education said. "The community is taking back ownership and pride in the school." . While the entire library. is an im- pressive site. the new .pentium 'computers are the key connection 16 the community. . in the summer. SHDHS principal Bill Gerth approached Exeter busi- nessman George Godbolt with the concept. The school was working with antiquated computers which' couldn't • run .today's software. Would local- businesses and in- dividuals sponsor 20 new pentiums _for the high school library? . Godbolt checked. with a few col- - leagues- who agreed the fund-. _raising campaign was a gond idea. Godbolt. said he really believed • the campaign could work when the Lions'Ciuh executive immediately' • responded to his request last sum- mer by donating $2.000 t� buy -a new computer.. . "At .that point. 1 knew' this wa going to work," Godbolt said. ` From (here. the support grew -to more than 30 contributors.. And we didn't • just support our own kids. Most of us already.. have this computer . equipment in our homes. We did it because some kids don't have these .(computers)." Godbolt explained. Although the initial goal was to • equip the . library with pentium • computers; there has been a sig- nificant spin-off frdm the cam- paign. Others have come forth to' donate used computers. 'Toronto Dominion has donated 30. re- furbished computers. •• ' "Another 15 used computers have been • donated from various ministry offices who became aware' , of the campaign," Gerth said. Godbolt said these additional do- nations- are the legacy of the cam- paign.:. "We all need to.. he thinking of What we have that the schools could use." Godboltemphasized. Teacher -librarian Nancy -Hunter said the renovations are a vast im- provement .from the former mpsphere. "The facilities were great for the 60's," she said. "The students ap- preciate the difference in the com- • paters." • • Students can now take advantage of educational CDs which the- old computers could` not, run.
