Story time. These little lambs were part of the Little Lambs/Story Hour annual Christmas
party on Dec. 2 at the Exeter Christian Reformed Church.
Children conduct church service in GB
GRAND BEND - The United
Church Women of Grand Bend
United Church met on December
11 at 12:30 p.m. in the Sunday
School rooms for a potluck lunch,
convened by Marg Love and
Norma Walper, with 21 in atten-
dance.
President Evelyn Johnson
opened with a poem on Christmas
time.
Vera Rempel read scriptures
verses. A Christmas reunion story
was ready by Laura Flewelling.
Jean Cassidy read a story from the
book "Christmas In My Heart",
about a German immigrant family
in 1874, who had settled on the
Dakota prairies in a sod house,
6,000 miles from their last
Christmas. For a Christmas tree
they -picked willows and forced -to
them to bloom, decorated them
with colored paper and made wil-
low dolls for the children.
Marlene Brenner and Irene
Kennedy conducted a singalong of
Christmas songs and hymns and
closed with Marlene singing -a solo
"Jesus Christ is. Born,"._
During the business, Lola
Jackson acted as secretary in the
absence of Bertie Keyes. Several
thank you letters were read by the
president.
The meeting closed with all
repeating the U.C.W. benediction.
Canned goods for the food bank
were brought in by the members.
Church services
The First Advent Sunday was
celebrated at Grand Bend United
Church on November 30. A purple
candle of Hope waslit by Amy
Jennison.
Rev. R. Putman presided for the
service of Holy Communion and
welcoming of new members.
Scriptures were read by Bette
Tufts. The choir's anthem was
"Jesus Took the Cup".
"Yuletidings", anthems and car-
ols for choir, flute and strings fea-
turing the original Austrian version
of "Silent Night" will be presented
at Grand Bend United Church on
December 14 at 3 p.m. Hot cider
and sweets will be served. There
will be a general collection.
It was Advent II at Grand Bend
United Church on December 7.
Rev. Putman talked to the children
about the Jesse Tree with more
items added to it. The children col-
lected many gifts from the congre-
gation to put` under the Angel Tree
to go to children in care of the
Huron County Children's Aid.
Scriptures were read by Ann
Russell. The choir's anthem was
"Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord".
Rev. Putman introduced Bob
Sharon, who spoke on "Human
Bights.='. •
Candle lighters were Alyssa
Nicholls and Matthew Lovie.
Prayers for others were given by
Edna Frampton. •
The third. Advent Sunday was
enjoyed at Grand Bend United
Church, with the children in charge
of the annual Christmas Pageant
and collection of White Gifts.
The call to worship and scrip-
tures were read by Ryan Murdock.
The third candle of Joy was lit by
Holly. and John Gray. The prayer of
approach was read by Ben Morgan.
The children's play "Benjamin's
Top" was narrated by Jude Morgan
and Sarah Tremain. This included
the nativity scene with children as
angels, wisemen and shepherds,
with Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.
Several Christmas hymns were
sung.
Rev. R. Putman talked to the
children as they added more addi-
tions to the Jesse Tree. There was a
musical offering with Elva
McIntyre at the piano and daughter
Kristin playing saxophone. The
offering was collected by Jessica
Brown, Holly Love, Matthew and
Michael Lovie, Jessie Morgan and
Allyssa Nicholls.
Piano musical offerings were
given by Charlie Love, Morgan
Bland, Amy Jennison and Sarah
and Matthew Tremain.
The flowers placed in the sanctu-
ary were in loving memory of
Hugh Turnbull Hendrick, by his
family.
Golden Agers
Grand Bend Golden Agers held
their .euchre Wednesday evening,
December -10-at-the, Legief- f tal
with five tables in play. Winners
were: Ladies high score - Ada
Dietrich; Ladies most lone hands -
a tie between four women,
Katherine Becker, Catherine
Junker, Aileen Ravelle and Mary
Waller; Ladies low score - Sien
Smits; Mens high score - Emerson
Des Jardine; Most Lone hands -
Ray Quantrill; Mens low score won
by Shirley Eagleson playing a
man's card.
The next euchre will be held
January 14.
Gift shop raises $2500 for Auxiliary
EXETER - A meeting of South
Huron Hospital Auxiliary was held
on December 9 at 2 p.m. President
Mary Fisher chaired the meeting.
Staff representative Maureen Cole
was introduced and welcomed.
A short story "The Little Horse
That Nobody Wanted" was present-
ed, written by the late Marion
Fletcher.
The group decided to purchase a
floor lamp and plant for a corner in
the main lobby of the hospital.
Grace Adkins, the Gift Shop
Convenor reported that gift shop
sales are good and she is adding to
the merchandise some things they
haven't had in the shop for sale.
Ticket sales on the group's quilt
amounted to almost $1600.00. The
lucky ticket went to J. MacNeil
from London.
Treasurer of the Gift Shop Mary
Carleton, presented the Auxiliary
with a cheque for $2,500. Gift of
the month went to Betty Wedlake.
The group was entertained with a
humorous fashion show narrated by
Joanne Bowen as members of the
hospital staff showed the latest
designer clothing in a very unique
style.
The hospital staff served fancy
sandwiches and lots of goodies.
The Auxiliary members always
look forward to the December
meeting when the hospital staff for.
a short time at least can forget
about cutbacks, amalgamation and
downsizing and have fun as they
bring.joy and laughter to all the
volunteers.

ETOBICOKE - Huron
Hurricanes Aquatic Club's Kristy
Cameron attended the recent
Speedo Canadian Open swimming
competition in Etobicoke and swam
to a silver medal in the 200 m.
breaststroke.
She was the only Hurricane qual-
ified to go to the meet that features
Canada's top swimmers.
She finished ahead of Maryann
Limpert. Lauren Van Oosten won
the gold.
Cameron also placed fourth in
.the 100 breaststroke, fifth in the
400 individual medley, first in con-
solation finals in both the 200 indi-
vidual medley, and the 50 breast.
The same weekend, several team
members participated in the
Nother's Invitational swim meet in
London. It is one of the largest
meets in Ontario with 900 swim-
mers from across the province.
Leslie Burton was fourth in the 400
individual medley, and fifth in the
100 backstroke, the 100 breast-
stroke and seventh in the 200 indi-
vidual medley. Mike Durst won a
bronze medal in the 50 breast. He
came fourth in the 50 fly and the 50
back, seventh in the 200 individual
medley, eighth in the 50 free and in
200 fly. Richard Million placed
sixth in the 50 freestyle, seventh in
the 100 fly, and eighth in the 50
backstroke. Andrea Vanderloo
placed fifth in the 50 fly, and sev-
enth in the 50 back.
Three swimmers from the
Hurricanes qualified to attend the
North York Aquatic Club's Youth
Cup International, with teams from
England, the U.S., and representing
every province in Canada. There
were not the numbers of swimmers,
of some years past, but the .compe-
tition remained extremely fierce.
Several Youth Cup records were
toppled.
Brittany Segeren had a terrific
meet, picking up a silver medal in
the 200 breaststroke and a bronze
in the 100 breaststroke. She also
placed fifth in consolation finals in
the 400 individual medley and in
the 100 butterfly. Lesley Burton
placed fifth in consolation finals in
the 100 butterfly. Melanie Culbert
placed sixth in the 800 freestyle
and won a youth national qualify-
ing time in this event. She placed
competitor from the London
Aquatic Club.
