Families -Need Support Too
By: Patti Colliver,
Family Initiative Co-ordinator, Perth -Huron;
Mental illness isn't something you can actually see or touch, it's invisible. Victims look normal, but
live with emotional pain. -
When mental illness "comes home" life turns upside down. You never know what to expect next.
These situations bring about a great deal of stress.. Learning to cope with this stress is essential. You
need to take care of yourself. The family of the person who is mentally ill, watch the dreams of their
loved one shatter. They remember who the person used to be, but now feel they no longer know this
person. When someone you love is diagnosed with a chronic mental illness you experience grief, you
move from denial and sadness to anger. It is important to grieve. It takes time, usually longer theh you
would like,
When a family member of a person with mental illness is introduced into the world of mental health
they generally are unaware of the large family to which they now belong. You are not alone...
The Family Initiative of Perth -Huron County is interested and willing to assist some new family
support groups. Two groups will be established, one in Listowel - also supporting families in the
Milverton/Millbank area, and the other in Seaforth - also supporting families from Clinton and
surrounding areas.
Some benefits you will gain from family support groups are: It helps to understand the illness, It
helps to talk to others who have been or are in similar circumstances, It helps to learn ways to cope
with the symptoms, and most of all !t helps you realize the importance of taking care f yourself.
If you are interested in developing a support group or in attending the existing groups, please call
Patti Colliver, Canadian Mental Health Association/Perth County Branch, 1-888-875-2944 Ext. 234 (toll
free) or 273-1391 Ext. 234.
