Shapton has been making Christmas pud- ding for more—than-35 years and'. . Started selling. it six years ago. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." said Shapton. " Custom- ers keep coming hack and hack." For scvcral.years. prior to selling from her home. Shapton • provided - - the pudding for her church's hi- zarre. She now has second genera- , tion customers. • Shapton starts making puddings just before craft shows and then continues as needed — her pud- dings are always fresh. She sells a variety` of sizes. depending on the needs of the customers. A variety of people buy pudding from Shapton. Some are 'older and no longer able to prepare the pud- ding. others are younger but too - busy while others have not learned the tradition from their mothers.. . She says many pcople'call her in the week befre. Christmas and some customers may even he phon- ing on -Dec. 24. Shapton's recipe is itself- part of her family's tradition. It has been. passed from her grandmother to her mother and now to .her. She has modified her Mothers recipe. . . "After it's cooled. 1 put it in plasL tic and in the fridge. Shapton ex- plained.- . Her pudding contains carrots and potatoes. Currants have gone out of style. Shapton steams the pudding for ahout two hours but the. exact steaming time depends on the size of the container. The sauce is another important part of the tradition: At her family's Christmas. the pudding and sauce are kept warns throughout the day.. The Hensall Fire Department purchased a new rescue van through fundraisers over the past two years. The van, which cost about $7,000. will be used in the village for accidents and fires. For the past two years the de partrnent has been fundraising for a rescue van, which now: sits ready lir action- in the Hensall Fire Department. • "Because there was an-_ in- crease in accidents and .medical emergencies, we saw a need for • it," explained the new lire chief Ken . Bruxer. adding hit ap- proximately two years ago it was decided a rescue van would he a • great benefit to the community. They approached village coun-. cil. service 'clubs: the lire hoard and "virtually every business. or- ganization and club got,involved7 in helping us." Bruxer said. - The van, costing about $7.000 is equipped with 911 jump seats. which allows two people to sit in one seat and put on an air pack while going to the scene. • "This is a time-saver,". Bruxer said. "')'hat way we have two peo- ple. ready to go when we get to the scene." Also purchased were some tools. equipnicnt and first aid supplies. While tliey stay have reached - their. goal in purchasing the Van. the fundraising is not officially over. "We're still fundraising to•raise money to outfit the'van," he said. Retirements and replacements Atter 35 years. Chief Jim Hyde is retiring from the Hensall Fire Dept. Replacing him is Ken Bruxer..Greg Campbell. is replacing Ken Bruxer as deputy -chief. Also retiring after -11-years :tg"a-rfir'etighter- is--Jnhn Baker. Donations given to six organizations. As part of the provincially funded Healthy Baby, Healthy Children Program, these parent resource visitors will begin inten- sive training on January 26, 1998. Parents have shared that bringing home a new baby is a life changing experience that they .don't feel pre- pared for. Along with this, some parents lack the support of family, stable finances and knowledge of what resources are available in their community. The Healthy Babies.
