Sales slow at Exeter
beer and liquor stores
Exeter council did not oppose the
permanent Sunday openings
By Kate Monk
T -A Reporter
. EXETER - Exeter's beer and liquor stores were
open on Sunday hut few shoppers took advantage of
the opportunity.
Barry _Baynham, manager of the Beer Store and
Dale Baker, manager of the LOBO outlet agreed
business was.slow.
• "Business wasn't that strong. Maybe people didn't
know about it," Baynham said.
Baker said sales were about the same as last year's
first Sunday in December.
-Exeter's peer and liquor stores were open last year
in December and sales increased with each Sunday
the stores were open, . according to the store man-
agers.
John Bates of Mothers Against Drunk Driving' said
the Sunday' openings will put more drunk drivers on
the road. - '
• • • "As you increase availability,: you .increase con-
' sumption as you increase consumption, you increase
abuse and drunk driving," he said.
Exeter Council had an opportunity to oppose the
• Sunday openings, hut defeated a motion ;by Reeve
Roy Triebner to not allow the LCBO and Beer Store
outlets In • Exeter to open on -apermanent. basis on
Sundays.
Council received a letter, from the Liquor Control
Beard of Ontario raying the Ontario government has
approved _year-round Sunday opening of LCBO and
Beer Store. If Exeter Council wished to object to
the Sunday openings.'it could advise the LCBO.
Triebner started the discussion.
"The trial runs (December and August) turned
into something on a permanent • basis. I certainly
can't support that," said Triebner.
The remainder of the councillors did not share
Triebner's opinion. They were mostly concerned
With the impact on other Exeter businesses.
Deputy Reeve Dave Urlin thought if Exeter's
outlets were not open, people may travel to an-
other town, such as Grand Bend. and pick up a hag
otgroceries at the same time.
"Looking after store'openings'needs to he left in
their (LCBO's) hands," he said. •
'Councillor Pete Armstrong said it's cine more re-
tail. business going along with Sunday openings.
"Probably a small numherM people will be us-
ing it," he said, adding if Sunday openings aren't
profitable, the LCBO would return to being closed
on Sundays: - .
Anotherconcern was that if the LCBO and Beer
Store were not allowed to open cin -Sundays. the
ball could he passed to variety stores since they
can he open on Sundays.
- 'It's better to have it sold by people in control."
. Urlin'commented. .
The motion to advise the LCBO that Exeter is
not in favor of Sunday openings was defeated with
only Triehner voting in favor of the motion.•
