his inaugural address; French said provincial downloading, the proposed Granton sewer pro-
ject and future municipal amalgamation are the pressing issues. Because the township
didn't replace road department's Hugh Davis when he retired earlier this year, existing staff
have had to take up the paperwork slack, French said, adding the road employees are now
looking after the Granton waterworks. French recogpized the Lucan Memorial Community
Centre Booster Club for all the fundraising it does and urged new councillors "Don't make
promises to ratepayers. Remember, you only have one vote at the council meetings."
Lucan's new council. Lucan's new council was sworn in at its inaugural meeting in the vil-
lage council chambers on Monday. Front left: Reeve Robert Benner, Deputy Reeve Harry
Wraith; back left: Councillors Glenn Silver, Perry Caskenette, Reg Crawford and Lucan Hydro
Commissioners Harold Dukeshire and Andy VanGeel. In his inaugural address, Benner said
council should formulate a vision for Lucan, solicit more public input, deal with pending
downloading from the province, make sure future amalgamation is decided by the people of
Lucan and there be free and open discussion that looks for constructive criticism. Benner
called for each council meeting's agenda be posted ahead of time at public places, that
meeting minutes be available at the library as soon as possible, that a village web site be
created so agendas and minutes would be readily available and that councillors develop new
strategies for listening and speaking to people. He also plans on opening the council cham-
bers to the public the first Saturday morning of each month so he and other councillors if
they choose can meet with anyone that has a question or comment.
