November 25, 1987 - The
life of one of Ontario's most
influential politicians over the
past 30 years ended on Tues-
day. November 17. Charles S.
MacNaughton passed away in
Exeter at the age. of 76 years
after a lengthy illness. Former.
Ontario Premier Bill Davis at-
tended the funeral and said,
"Nobody had a bad word for
Charlie. He had great leader-
ship qualities." Ontario Agri:
culture Minister Jack Riddell
called MacNaughton, "One of
the leading figures in Ontario
politics".
At Thursday's annual Town
of Exeter Appreciation Night,
the Citizen of the- Year award
went to Times Advocate edi-
torBill Batten. In making the
presentation, Mayor Bruce
Shaw said, "Bill was the con-
science of the town." Consta-
ble George Robertson re-
ceived a plaque for 20 years
of service to the town's police
department.
At the recent meeting of the
Ontario' Municipal Electric
Association, Exeter PUC
chairman Murray Greene re-
ceived a 20 year award and
PUC manager Hugh Davis
was honored for 25 years of
service.
Leona Glavin was the win:
ner of $1.000 in .the :recent
Stephen minor 'hockey draw.
When accepting the prize she
appeared with 14 .of her
grandchildren who -all play
minor hockey in Stephen.
Wes Hickson was named
Citizen of the Year in Lucan.

winner of the $800 Christmas
jackpot sponsored by the Exet-
er Businessmen's Association
was Mrs' Donald Ralph of Ex-
eter. She won $50.
Three new councillors and a
new deputy -reeve will sit on
the : 1958 Hay township coun-
cil. Alex Mousseau, a council-
lor this year won the deputy's
scat and new councillors are
William Davidson, Karl Ha-
berer and John H. Soldan.
Reeve. V.L. Becker woh his
third term by acclamation.
An Exeter lady, Mrs. Eunice
Stone, sighted a "fireball",
which was reported over West-
ern
estern Ontario over the weekend.
She said the hovering object
"was a rounded ball with a tail
of fire which looked to be
about six feet long." Several
other area people reported sim-
ilar sightings.
50 YEARS AGO
November 22, 1947 - The
Exeter municipal council has
purchased 100 new uphol-
stered leather folding chairs for
use in the Town Hall.
The Exeter Area High
School board has purchased
• six acres of land adjoining the
school property where the pub-
lic school owns three acres.
The stew land is for the new
high school building.
75 YEARS AGO
November 24, 1922 - Dollar
Days were observed by the
merchants of Exeter on Friday
and Saturday and were a great
success despite the very in-
clement weather. A heavy
snow storm raged all day Fri-
day.

Claimants may pick up their cheques and return their bi-
weekly report cards through Human Resource •
Development Canada cheque distribution centers.
Clients will berequired to show two•pieces of
identification in order to pick up their benefit cheques;
