Jr. D Hawks ahead of Irish by a point
Hanging tough. Lucan Irish fo
riod action last week at Lucan
win 5-3.

- EXETER-- The Exeter Jr: D
Hawks hockey club find them-
selves at the top of the Morenz Di-
vision by a point despite splitting a
two -game homestand on the week-
end.
The Hawks lost an overtime
thriller to Yeck Conference leaders
Port Stanley at home on Saturday
4-3. Ryan Chamncy, Scan McCann
and •Ryan Freiter scored Exeter's
goals. Jeff' Glavin helped out on
Chamncy's and McCann's goals
while Greg Goodwin and Jeff
Campbell also notched assists. •
Special teams scaled Exeter's
fate — the last two Lakers goals,
including the overtime marker,
wcre scored on the powerplay
while their second goal came while
shorthanded. •
But Hawks coach/G.M. Dave
Revington said ref Rob Moore
shouldn't have handed those pow-
erplay opportunities to Port Stan-
ley, especially in OT against the
17-2 Lakcrs. Ryan Freiter was
called for elbowing at 7:53 of the
third while both teams had a. man
off; Port Stanley scored 42 seconds
later.
In overtime, Chris MacDonald
was called for roughing at 1:38 and
Jeff Glavin was called for the same
infraction a'. 1:07 along with Port's
Jonathon Sotelo; the Lakers scored •
with 25 seconds left.
"It was the poorest exhibition of
officiating I've seen- this year,"
Revington said. "You should let
the players decide the game. We
should have had the opportunity to
win. (Moore) took that away from
us.'
Not only did Moore call ques-
tionable penalties late in the game
while ignoring much of the same
antics earlier on in Revington's
opinion, the linesmen missed obvi-
ous icing calls.
Officiating was not at the centre
of the outcome during Exeter's 4-3
win over Lambeth at homc on Fri-
day. Glavin and Jason Dunlap led
the Hawk attack with a goal and
two assists each while McCann
potted the winning goal and an as-
sist. Chris MacDonald also had a
goal and an assist and Geoff Mayer
helped out on onc. '

Lucan Co -coach
Jason Bukala said
his team needs to
improve if- .they
want to• compete
with the likes of
Exeter and Mitch-
ell for top spot in
the division.
"We're playing inconsistent and
we've been an average hockey
team over the last two weeks," Bu-.
kala said. "Right now we are no
where near a first place -team."
The Irish scored four unanswered
goals in the third period to come
from behind to beat the Mount
Brydges-Bulldogs - on - Wednesday:-
Lucan's goals came from Dan Har-
dick, Neal Costello, Daryl Boshart,
Jeremy Lambourn and Mark Phil-
ips with assists by Philips. Boshart,
Ryan Carroll, Mike
Jaremchenko, Da-
vis and Hudson.
The Irish were
down 2-0 and 3-1
at the end of the
first and second pe-
riods respectively,
but a great third pe-
riod paved the way
towards the win.
"We were working hard but we
were just making some mental mis-
takes," Bukala said of his team's
play during the first two stanzas.
Hc added Mount Brydges dressed

Exeter's win and overtime loss
puts them back in first place with
24 points with a 1 1 -5-1-1 record
compared with Lucan's 23 points
and 10-5-2-1 record. Mitchell has
joined the logjam atop the division
standings with two wins last week
and now have 22 points. -
Bukala said the fast approaching
Mitchell seems to be the best team
in their division right now.

Chiefs best Port Stanley and Cayuga
PORT STANLEY — The Exeter Juvenile
Chiefs are showing their composure in
recent games on their way to a 2-1
record last week.
Exeter doubled Port Stanley in their
bam on Monday. Dan Gdanski scored
a pair for the Chiefs (including an emp-
ty natter) with Marty deBruyn and Ja-
son Becker adding singles. Brian Rich-
ardson, Rob Morrissey, Bryan
Ellerington and Paul Knight added as-
sists to their point totals.
"It was a close, clean game," man-
ager John Rasenberg said
At Cayuga on Saturday, Exeter
played cool and calm on their way to
a 6-2 win. Knight led the Chiefs attack
with two goals and two assists with sin-
gles from deBruyn, Blake Schade, Dan
Finkbeiner and Chris Reabum. Other
assists went to Reabum, Morrissey and
Ian Becker with two each, deBruyn and
Jason Becker.
"Our guys played a good disciplined
game and didn't take any foolish pen-
alties," Rasenberg said.
Exeter started the week with a 5-2 loss
at New Hamburg on Thursday. Dan
Gdanski and Cam Dougall scored for
the Chiefs with Matt Froud assisting on
both goals and Schade adding a sin-
gle helper.
The Chiefs record is 5-3-1, good for
third place in the league. The team
next visits St. Marys on Saturday, a 9:30
p.m. start, and finally retums home af-
ter over a month away to host Acton
on Dec. 6 at 8:30 p.m.

SHDHS sr. volleyball team
makes Huron -Perth finals
. CLINTON — The South Huron District High School senior boys
volleyball team had a shot at the Huron -Perth championship at Clin-
ton St. Anne's yesterday after the T -A went to press.
The seniors qualified for the H -P final tournament by making it to
the Huron final versus Wingham Madill last week at St. Anne's. The
Pant lost three straight games to Madill 15-5, 15-9 and 15-6.
it to the final by knocking out Central Huron in their
match 3-2 with game scores of 15-8, 15-13, 1-15, 8-15
-13.
Panther senior coach Scott Halpenny said Derek Etherington's
outstanding setting and Darryl Romphf s several kills made the dif-
ference in the semi-final. Halpenny said Romphf had a "spectacWar"
fifth semi-final game with "important kills and blocks."
But the two-hour "exciting" semi-
final in which South Huron battled
back from a 10-5 deficit took its toll
on the team. Halpenny said the Pan-
thers were "very tired" during the fi-
nal versus the tough Madill troupe.
He added all eight of his players con-
tributed to the second place finish.
While the senior season wasn't over
yet when the T -A caught up to Hal -
penny last week, he was already look-
ing forward to '98 because only two
of his players, starter Scott Reid and
Dave Farquhar, were graduating while Madill has eight grads mov-
ing on next season.
The Panther junior boys were knocked out of the semi-finals (and
the season) by Madill last week in three straight games, 9-15, 7-15
and 13-15. Coach Phil Conley said the whole team put up a great ef-
fort and added captain Jeff Finkbeiner provided "good leadership."
Standouts on the court included Finkbeiner and Lance Pfaff who fin-
ished some great spikes for the Panther offence.
Conley said the season highlight was reaching the finals in the
Stratford St. Mike's tournament and that '97 was a "good building
year for South Huron volleyball.
"Many talented Gr. 10 students are moving up to senior and some
great talent is moving up to junior next year," Conley said.
The midget girls basketball team finished second at the Huron fi-
nal tournament in Goderich last week. They won their semi-final
versus-Scaforth but fell to Goderich 37-31 in the final.
Both the junior and senior girls were knocked out of the playoffs
earlier in the month.
There's a short break in high school sports till boys basketball
starts its season on Dec. 3 when South Huron travels to Central Hu-
ron and girls volleyball starts its season on Dec. 9. The Panther girls
play their first matches versus host Central Huron and MadiVI on
Dec. 18:
"Many talented
Gr., 10 students
are moving up
to senior and
some great
talent is moving
up to junior
next year."
