The evening also included a concert by Jimmy Lee Fuller with Ethel Triehner as the opening musician. As the parent organization, ETM has a number of divisions: Sa- maritan. thrift stores, _food hanks, refurbishing outlets and pro- motions. "The food bank is doing a phe- nomenal outreach," said Dan By- elis of ETM. Samaritan food hanks serve peo- ple from Forest to Wingham and from Lake Huron to east of -Mitch- ell. The record month was nearly 600 families with over 400 families per month receiving food. Byelis says the Samaritan Food Bank is very cost-efficient but it still costs money to provide the ser- vice. Operating expenses can range from $1.400 to $3,000 per month. However, it only costs just more than $6 per month per family on average. Costs are kept down thanks to .nearly 100 volunteers who deliver the food to families. Corporate donors account for some large-scale donations. Ac- cording to Byelis, one truck can de- liver up to $200,000 worth of food- stuffs to the food hank and its • inventory can be SI -million of food at any given time. The Samaritan Food Bank is also a depot for other food banks. "We owe a lot of thanks to cor- porate donors," Byelis said. The need for the ETM's services is great in Huron County where many people have fallen through the cracks in government services. "Because we're a rural county, a lot of these people have no means of communication or trans- portation," adding word-of-mouth has helped connect people to ETM services. "Even the government know how many people had fallen through the cracks. They feel people who live on farms are farmers and have money," he claimed. Byelis says this is not always the case. The farm and house could be rented and the people could even be without transportation. "We- found in Dungannon, there are a lot of Mexican Mennonites with families that number 12 to 20 kids.- said Byelis, adding, "We have found things we never knew existed in Canada." • According to Byelis, the govern- ment often doesn't know about these situations because the people did not themselves do -not know who to re- port to. • In many instances local churches and neighbors are helping by occa- sionally giving food. Many are try- ing to help themselves as well. "The standards these people are living under, I'm sorry to say, com- pare to the third world and many Canadians don't know about it," he said. However, ETM does much more than just food bank. work. "We are very much a. Christian organization that is a missionary ministry to the local area," he said. adding, "Exeter is our home." "Every time there is a need in the com- munity. we're there." he •explained. "If we're to he a mis- sionary ministry. we must." The organization is looking for support from - the local churches. "We are a mis- • sionary service to their hack yards. We are looking to those churches .to get behind this effort. Some already have and many more need to," Byelis said.
