Saintsbury sewer project plows ahead
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
-LUCAN Future Biddulph
Township residents will benefit
from Herdonjoe's Herman Lan -
sink's generous but self -benefitting
offer to front the cost of Lucan's
Main St. sewer extension past
Saintsbury Line into the township.
The good news surfaced at a re-
cent township council meeting.
Lansink will pay the $21,769 cost
of the project which Biddulph
Township. will pay•hack within 30
years. Biddulph administrator Larry
Hotson said.
The move will not only give fu-
ture Biddulph residents the option
of hooking up to Lucan's sewer
system but will benefit Lansink's
businesses on the northeast corner
of Main/Saintsbury, as well as oth-
er businesses there that have had
problems with their septic tanks.
The work is expected to be done
by the lowest bidding contractor,
Elgin Construction of St. Thomas,
by sometime this
week, Hotson said.
There was a con-
cern the township
couldn't enter into
a binding agree-
ment to pay Lan -
sink back because
it -didn't have a de-
velopment charge
bylaw but changes to the Municipal
Act that take effect on Jan. 1, 1998
will make the move possible, Hot -
son said.
In other Biddulph council news,
Middlesex County appointed amal-
gamation facilitator William Thom-
son met with Hotson and deputy
clerk Joan Goddard recently to get
their input on possible mergers
with neighboring municipalities.
Notes from their two and a half
hour meeting are
being kept con-
fidential from
council so not to
influence coun-
cillors during
Thomson's meet-
ing with them next
month.
"Both Joan and I
recommended that some amal-
gamations could be beneficial but
bigger doesn't necessarily mean
better," Hotson said of the fallout
from their meeting with Thomson.
"... some
amalgamations
could be beneficial
but bigger doesn't
necessarily mean
better."

Give the gift of life this holiday season
The London Centre
Red Cross is hold-
ing a blood donor
clinic in Lucan on
Dec. 2
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
LUCAN - Take a break from
your hectic holiday schedule to
give the gift of life.
You can do this by donating
blood at the Canadian Red Cross
Society -London Centre clinic at
Lucan Memorial Community Cen-
tre on Dec. 2 from 6 p.m. -9 p.m.
Red Cross recruiter Carol Mitch-
ell said the goal is to again collect
60 units of blood (one drawn per
donor). The July clinic in Lucan
generated 64 units of blood, four
above the target.
Who can donate blood'? Anyone
between age 17-71 (first time do-
nors must start before age 61), over
110 lbs and has waited at least 56
days since their last donation. Do-
nors must be in good general health
and must bring photo identification.
Women who are breast feeding
their child have to wait three
months after your last feeding to
donate blood, women who have
just given birth and are not breast
feeding must wait six months after
delivery to give blood; those who
have had any kind of body piercing
or tattoo work must wait a year be-
fore giving blood.
People on some kinds of med-
ication may not be able to donate
blood. Mitchell suggests those con-

The donation process takes about
an hour with the actual donation
taking about 10 minutes. The rest
of the time is spent on doc-
umentation and physical tests,
Mitchell said.
Here's what happens during a
typical donation: the donor is re-
ceived by Red Cross staff or vol-
unteers; a blood type and blood
iron test is done after a finger prick;
the donor then fills out a health
questionaire in private and then dis-
cusses it with a Red Cross staff
member who takes the donor's
blood pressure and temperature to
make sure they aren't coming down
with any kind of illness; the dona-
tion is next, with a rest period and
refreshment (juice or pop and cook-
ies) to end the donation.
Mitchell said blood is especially
needed during the holiday season
because of the higher number of
traffic accidents and other trauma/
emergency health cases and be-
cause regular donors are sometimes
unavailable due to their holiday
schedules.
