Reeves say Huronview staff at risk
By Blake Patterson
Signul-Star Stria' •
Members of Huron County
Council arc concerned the county
is mistreating staff at Huronview,
the home for the aged located in
Clinton.
At the Nov. 6 meeting of Huron
County Council. Reeve Tom
Cunningham of Hullctt Township•
and Reeve .Brian McBurney of
Turnherry Township announced
they .had recently • toured
Huronview and had concerns
regarding .how the; administration
is treating staff at the facility.
McBurney said there is a secure
arca of the facility_ which at times
only has one stall member on
"duty despite the fact some of the
residents could turn violent. •
"Iwouldn't want my daughter.
(working) in the secured wing."
he said.
Cunningham questioned the
facility's policy not to- notify staff
-of personal phone calls they
received until break time.
"As a . good employer.: we
should look after our staff's
needs." he said. ,
McBurney tried to contact a
stale' incinhcr and said the call
was important. but was told he
-could only leave a message.
"If this is the way we are treat-
ing our elderly and our staff. it's
no wonder they're upset." he said:
Huronview Administrator
Cathy Brown responded by say-
ing the policy regarding persi►lial
calls is an on-going "difficult sit-
uation" for the -administration and
the staff at the home...
She said the difficulty arises
from the facility's effort. to
"strikc.a balance. between being
a residence and an institution. On
the eine hand. they realize. it is.
important to notify staff if impor
tant phone calls arc received. yet
on the other hand, use of the
overhead page system i. "tough
on residents" hecausc it 'creates "a
fecling.of institution.'"
She assured council that staff
•
members are notified if an .emer-
gency call is received. hut beyond
that. written messages are left in a •
specific location for staff 10 check
during. their break time.
Slie said the notice regarding
the phone policy was posted in
February. and no complaints have
yet been lodged.
Regarding slatting in the
secured arca, Brown explained
