The difference between agricultural and rural
The changing nature of rural
communities has resulted in a shift
in the people that make up these
communities. The "exodus bf
former urbanites to the "peaceful
countryside" together with the
decrease in the number of people'
who farm as a primary career have
both led to this shift. Therefore, it
is clear that "agricultural" and
"rural" no longer mean the same
thing.
Naturally, as people move into a
new neighborhood, they become.
active in the affairs of their
community., This can include
everything from joining local
sports_ and social groups to running
for local office. In fact, it very
likely that, as the fall municipal
elections approach, there will be
even more people who are not from
a farming background -
"non -farmers" if you will - running
, for seats on local council's. '
The changing nature of rural
'communities also means that there
will be more "non -farmers"
speaking up to voice their feelings
about issues in their community.
This impact is being felt in many
townships that are now' feeling
great pressure to deal*with the
issues like mrqaanure management.
• In light orate above, members of
, the traditional "farming"
community have two obligations.
First, they need to step up and run
for local office to make sure that
their interests are properly heard
and considered. Second, they must
make sure that they "get the word
out" to non -farmers about the
nature of their business. The recent
"farm hiker" tour in Middlesex
County was an excellent example
of the type of educational effort
that is needed in this regard..
•
Have you ever used the words
"rural" and. "agricultural" in the
same context? To most people,
they are as interchangeable as the
words "potatoes" and "spuds". But
is this really the case today? In fact,
in many ways, it is not.
In the world of land use planning
"agricultural" is a term that broadly
describes an area that iS
predominantly used for farming. It
includes all of the various land
uses that make up the fabric of this
landscape including lots that have
been severed from farms and small
pockets of land that are not
suitable for farm use. It may also
include natural features such as
woodlots and -wetlands On the
other hard, "rural" is used to
describe an area that may contain a
few small pocket: of land which
are suitable for growing crops but
which is, for the most part, not
made' up of good, productive
farmland.
At the municipal level,
"agricultural" often refers to the
'business of growing and raising
the food on which we all depend. It
also describes an economic

activity that is not only an
important generator of economic
activity but also a way of life for
many people. In contrast, the term
"rural" is often used to describe the
community that exists outside of
the boundaries of a big city or even
a small town or village. It describes
a larger community in which
agriculture is simply an important
sub -component.
