Curlingready to rock your winter
EXETER — if you're tired of
hockey, skating and skiing but still
want to enjoy a winter sport, the
folks at the Exeter Curling Club
have something for you.
The club has a program or league
to fit anyone's interest level or
schedule, from curling rookies to
veterans. .
Club past -president Cathy Cade
said curling is a sociable activity.
"It makes the winters fly by," she
said..
Club second vice-president Les
Hills (who is also one of three in-
structors in the club) said anyone
can curl.
"You don't have to be a jock or
tall," he said. "You can be nine or
90 and it's cheap."
Those with competitive bones
can also find -fun in curling with the
club's Challenge league.
The junior program for youths
aged about seven to high school is
relatively new, Hills -said, and there
are' now boys and girls high school
teams.
"This is where the future of curl-
ing lies," he said.
Sue Brintncll coaches the small-
est curlers that meet each Sunday at
1 p.m.
Last March the club hosted the
Colts and Masters provincial cham-
pionships and the South Huron Dis-
trict High School boys won the Hu-.
ron-Perth curling . championship
under the guidance of coach Harry
Jacobi. This year's high school
curling schedule is on hold till the
end of the protest by teachers.
Founded in 1956, the Exeter
Curling Club bought its first rocks
fron to Emhro Curling Club and
mel , rs first curled on four ice
sheets at the Exeter Skating Club.
The club built its facility (including
the road to the" site on Riverside
Dr.) in 1960. -
Major events at the club this -sea-
son include many sponsored hoin-
seils with zone playdowns for
Lakers hosting spinal clinic
CLINTON — Those who wan; to, find out how to avoid spinal in-
juries on the ice can find out how at a Huron -Perth Lakers 'AAA'
hockey club sponsored free clinic at Clinton Arena on Monday,at 7
p.m.
The guest speakers will be Ken Allore '(a spinal injury victim
while playing hockey in '86), Dr. Gary Barwitzki (University of
Western Ontario) and Victor Fulcher (clinic organizer). The pres-
entation will explain a spinal injury from a medical perspective.
demonstrate the impact of a spinal injury on the quality of life of a
victim and provide tips on how players can avoid causing/receiving
a spinal injury. '
Players, coaches and parents from all minor hockey systems are
welcome.
