Lucan Library hours: Mon- day and Thursday, 2 p.m. -9 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday, 2 p.m. -5 p.m., Letter to the Your views editor Letter to Helen Johns Dear Editor: As chair of the Exeter Public School Advisory Council, which represents the parents. the community. and the staff of Exeter Public School. i would like to share a letter with your that has been written to Mrs. Helen Johns. MPP. on be- half of the E.P.S. Advisory Council. "Dear Mrs. Johns: The Exeter Public School Advisory Council would like to express our con- cerns over the changes being implemented currently and under consideration in Bill 160. Although we support efforts to improve the quality of education. we are not convinced that improved quality will be the result of the chahges taking place. These concerns can be summarized as follows: • Changes such as new report cards. and new curriculum are being imple- mented much too quickly and without adequate communication to parents. and without sufficient training or preparation for the staff who must implement these changes. As a result. we as parents. the community at large, and educa- tors are confused and frustrated by these changes. We will be providing further feedback on the report cards after they are distributed in November. • Bill 160 appears to make significant changes which will remove much of the education decision making from the focal level. and place it in the hands of Queen's Park. An example of this is class sizes, which are escalating each year, not because of increased administrative staff. hut directly because of funding cuts. The reduction in the number of trustees. together with school hoard amalgamation further add to the impression that our input will be 'wa- tered down', or neglected. • There hasbeen no indication of what the new education funding model will be. This issue is especially important in light of Bill 160 since we are con • - cerned that both the amount of resource and the use of those resources will be mandated, thus eliminating most if not all flexibility in the education system. • While we support the staff of Exeter Public School in their efforts to imple- ment the many changes taking place and minimize the day to day disruption caused by these changes, the children of our community may pay a price for the sweeping changes that are taking place. We are concerned that the uncoor- dinated and rapid changes laking place may ultimately cause confusion and stress for our children as they are forced to adapt to these changes. In summary, we are pleased with some of the changes such as standard re- port cards and standard expectations across the province, however we arc con- cerned about the pace, scope, communication and coordination of the sweeping changes being proposed. We want the education system of this province to re- main in the hands of the people of Ontario, not in the hands of a group of gov- ernment officials who arc far removed from the classroom. our children. and our community. Please convey these concerns to the Minister of Education and the Premier at Queen's Park. We also took forward to a response from you re- garding this message. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf." We as an Advisory Council urge the community to become involved in com- municating to our government our concerns so that our children receive the best education possible. Sincerely, Randy Wagler, Chair, Exeter Public School Advisory Council • Bargain hunting Rummaging for deals. John. VanOss looks over a clothing rack at the South Huron Hospital Auxiliary's fall rummage sale last week at the Rec Centre. The sale raised about $8,900 to go towards patient care equipment, about the same amount as the '97 spring sale. "It was a good sale and well worth all the work," organizer Vera Armstrong said. The Auxiliary's next rummage sale is planned for April '98.
