The Panthers heat the Listowel Lightning 1-0 in the Huron -Perth final at SHDHS on Thursday. Lori Richardson scored for the Panthers and Kelly Fulton backstopped the shutout. "It feels good," Pan- ther- captain Shawna Rowe said after the H -P final win. "Listowel has really improved a lot. We just had to give it that little ex- tra effort." Rowe said the tournament win al Ridley College on Oct. 18 "was for coach Jim "Workie" Workman. The Panthers' hope for a WOS- SA title and an OFSAA berth was dashed in a 1-0 loss to arch rivals_ Medway during the WOSSA final at SHDHS•on Saturday. Workman said both teams played aggressive hockey with the game going end to end. "The large number of relatives and fans were treated to a low - scoring hut exciting nail-biting game," Workman said. Medway advances to OFSAA in Brampton, but just when the tour- nament will be played is up in the airdue to the teachers strike. SHDHS last won OFSAA in '94 and were beat out after pool play last year. The Panthers beat St. Thomas Parkside 1-0 in the WOSSA semi- final in the second overtime period on a goal by Rowe, Fulton again earned the shutout. In pool play, SHDHS blanked Ingersoll 5-0 (two goals by Rowe and singles by Lori Rich- ardson, Va- nessa Laye and Shauna Koehler) 2-0 (goals by Fulton again "The large number of relatives and fans were treated to a low -scoring but exciting nail-biting game." and North Middlesex Rowe and Koehler, earning the shutouts. The Panthers also won two tour- naments this season: their own Red and Black tourney and one at Rid- ley College. Workman said Med- way played at both tourneys but the teams didn't meet. Workman said top scorer Rowe and top defender Preslee Maver are graduating this year leaving "big holes to ,fill." He's hopeful this year's rookies will step up to till Rowe's and Maver's cleats. On Saturday, Exeter lost 3-2 at home to a hard hitting New Ham- burg team. Coach Mike Soldan said New Hamburg "came out bump- ing" and corralled Exeter's offence for the first two periods. The Chiefs stormed out of the shoot in the third but came up one goal short even after Using an extra attacker in the dying moments with goalie . Nathan Hern on the bench. Exeter goals were scored by Ian Becker (assisted by Steve Rasenberg) and Matt Froud (from Jason Becker and Scott Rasenberg). • Early "unnecessary. retaliatory penalties" penalties and a lack of early offensive spark found Exeter down 3-1 after two periods in Sun- day's contest in Aylmer versus the Flames, Soldan said. The Chiefs again found life in the third stanza and skated away from potential penalty situations. The discipline paid off with Exeter enjoying two two-man advantages which they capitalized on once. Again Exeter pulled their goal- . tender (this time Dennis Roth) for an extra attacker late in the third but couldn't find any space through Aylmer's goaltending. Scoring for the Chiefs were John Rutten (from Matt Froud and Dan Storey), Froud (from Brian Richardson) and Storey (Jason Becker and deBruyn). , Soldan said the New Hamburg Toss is of concern since Exeter meets them three more times this season in Northeast Division action in the Southern Counties Juvenile League. Coach Kevin McAiter said the team needs to work on their "bump and grind" skills and taking their man consistently on defence. He said they also need to work on the offence, hitting and staying out of the penalty box. Soldan said the New Hamburg loss is of concern since Exeter meets them three more times this season.
