On October 21, a Sorority Day Trip was organized by Donna Webster and Verla Russell to Murray's Christmas House in Arkona. Fourteen members and one guest departed at I p.m. from the South Huron Rec Centre and were delighted to see the decorated Christmas trees, holiday arrangements and ornaments. The ladies saw many ideas to enhance their own Christmas celebrations. The group also stopped at the Rock Glen Farm Market to view the produce, home baking and arts and crafts. To complete the day the ladies returned to Grand Bend and enjoyed supper at Aunt Gussies. The next meeting will be at Shirley Walkom's in Mitchell on November 4. As you drop in the package of potato chips, the little ghost giggles and dashes on toward the next house. A moment later, he's back. "I forgot to say thank you." he whispers. "Were you scared?" Halloween is an ancient celebration in modern dress. Once it was thought to be the single night of the year when the dividing line between this world and the spirit world became transparent, and ghostly creatures roamed the earth. In ancient times, darkness was frightening, and the late autumn meant longer nights, colder days, and the start of a season marked by hunger and deadly illness. Those cardboard tombstones and glow -in - the -dark skeletons poke fun -at the grim reality of an era when harsh winter winds would fill the village graveyard. People needed light to keep back the creatures of the night - today's jolly carved pumpkins hearken back to the hollowed out turnips holding bits of candle, the crude lanterns carried by young folk as they went from house to house, laughing and playing pranks, demanding food and drink. Halloween.meant the harvest was done, and the world was waiting for the winter to begin. The kind, benevolent spirits of summer had stepped aside to let other, crueller spirits rule for a time. In ancient . days, people weren't all that sure summer -would return. And in truth, it would not for many people in each isolated small village: So people laughted at what they could not control, and dressed up to poke fun at what they feared. Today we flip a switch, and•the.room is filled with light as bright as summer sunshine. We turn a dial, and the house is warm. Late autumn is no longer a time to be feared. And yet... . , There is something about this time of year that makes Halloween seem appropriate. We feel a little quieter, and want to sleep more. Medicine has a label for it - SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder. But - it isn't an illness, it's a response to the changing of the season, the lengthening of the nights, the need to conserve energy. We don't hibernate like bears (at least most of us don't), but there is a physiological response. And there is an emotional one. There is a need for a little fun and laughter, a treat or two. So we celebrate Halloween by handing out goodies to all the little cowboys and clowns, ghosts and space aliens scampering greedily from house to house. We have costume parties. We carve pumpkins. Some people go to great effort to entertain their neighbors by putting up imaginative decorations. Sadly, there are a few who will'use the Halloween as an excuse to vandalize and destroy. This isn't celelebrating an ancient Christian • festival which has its roots deep in pagan times. It isn't even.fun_ It is - criminal behavior, nothing more, nothing less. Leave the decorations alone.
