A tribute to Doug Gould
"1 know my Dad would be honored,
as we are."
Dear Editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
members of the Exeter Heritage Foundation in their
recent presentation during a Town Council meeting,
honoring my late father, Doug Gould.
My Dad faced and overcame many challenges
throughout his life. One of the more challenging was
the saving and restoration of "The Olde Town Hall".
Anyone who knew my Dad, knew how hard he and
his committee fought - a battle he would fight until
the end.
Your dedication of the clock and plaque is a won-
derful tribute. I know my Dad would be honored, as
we are. A special "Thank You" also goes out to Bill
Mickle and Bob Heywood for their many kind
words.
To the Exeter Heritage members who continue to
carry on, "Thank You" for making my Dad's dream
become reality! Your endless efforts, hard work and
perseverance have turned an old building into a
beautiful site and a piece of heritage we should all be
proud of.
Sincerely,
Anne Gould -Sullivan and family
Exeter Minor Hockey has no
connection with ad company
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
EXETER - A Cambridge advertising company has no
connection with Exeter Minor Hockey according to its
president John Rasenberg.
Rasenberg told the T -A last week he has received several
inquiries from Exeter businesses who've told him A&K
Advertising was soliciting sponsors for schedules of games
to be played by Exeter teams.
"We have never authorized this and we have no knowl-
edge of this company," Rasenberg said.
A&K's Ron Kelly said he has cancelled all ads from the
Exeter businesses and the seven-year-old tabloid publica-
tion featuring listings of .all major Ontario hockey tourna-
ments will not appear in Exeter.
"I have no problem with Exeter not wanting it," Kelly
said.
A&K solicits different ads from each community it cir-
culates in but uses the same information on minor hockey
in each edition.
"I was solicited by a sales rep who called my business
giving the impression there was a connection to our hockey
organization," Rasenberg said.
Though the sales method can be misleading, the practice
is not illegal, Huron County OPP Const. John Marshall
said.

To what ultimate fate are pro
sports heading?...
Dear Editor;
At this time of year, and especially this year, there
are many themes that one might choose to write
about. There is this beautifully late fall following an
obstinately late spring, a Thanksgiving with bless-
ings again far surpassing reverses, and a display of
autumn glories rarely excelled. It is difficult for a
censor to find a whipping boy, but annually in early
fall we hit the pot pourri stage in professional sports
when every major professional sport is winding
down, starting up or in full tilt, all at the same time.
It was long the case that each major sport was ac-
corded major rights to attention and support in its
own season. It was not possible to avoid some over-
lapping of closing phases with openings, and some
concurrent running of an outdoor sport with an in-
door, which was pardonable. Fall belonged to foot-
ball, winter to hockey and basketball, and spring
and summer to baseball. Right now at writing time,
both the,American and the National baseball leagues
are in the throes of their final seven -game playoffs,
the NHL and the NBA are just beginning their long

schedules and the NFL and CFL are in full battle,
with casualties on all sides. What does one watch,
listen to or take in personally? It almost makes one
feel guilty of divided loyalty. I'm a listen -only fan
myself, and never get too excited until crucial and
final games are on.
To what ultimate fate are pro sports heading? The
rate at which players are signing multi-million dol-
lar contracts and prices of spectator seats are in-
creasing makes one wonder how long such an unre-
alistic situation can continue. The almost general
decrease in attendance at games and the deficit oper-
ations of some of the clubs are further signs of the
death knell, or at least a widespread deadly plague.
It could be that players, staff and owners are pricing
themselves right out of business. That is certainly
not to be hoped for, but there would seem to be little
chance of retrenchment in operational costs. I am at
least a luke-warm sports fan, warmer at playoff
times, and would hope that some reasonable middle.
ground among players, staff, owners and fans will
revitalize and prolong professional sports into all
our futures. I pick Cleveland to win the '97 World
Series. Vive le sport!

a) Set aside adequate time at 8:30 p.m. for a public meeting at the first
meeting of council each January, April, July and October for Individuals or
groups to attend without appointment. There would be no coat as
meetings would be in the council chambers and members of council would
be there for their regular council meeting.
b) Discontinue township paid employed benefits to members of Council.
(Cost In 1996 $5,158.92). Council members would continue to receive
coverage under our general lnsurence policy. (Cost In 1996 *287.00)
c) Assign from 1 to 5 Council members to attend municipal drain meetings
depending on size and complexity rather than having all 5 member, being
paid to attend all municipal drain meetings.
d) Reduce payment In 1998 to the conservation authority reflecting our cuts
In grants from Ontario government which meant cuts in 1997 to road and
other departments. Stephen Twp. operates Crediton and Port Blake Parks
(has some Income). In last 2 years township Installed ono paid for a roof on
bopavilions.
e) Reviewth our policy of council members attendance and remuneration paid to

1) 1 would recommend that no new equipment be purchased for office or road
department until a decision is mode regarding restructuring or

)) Freeze council's remuneration at 1997 sates for 1998. Review It before
1999 compared to other municipalities.
