Huron Park native trading his
hockey stick for golf clubs
By Craig Bradford
T -A Reporter
HAMILTON, N.Y. — Huron
Park native Steve DuBarry knows
how to turn a negative into a pos-
itive.
Not that he didn't have a lot of
soul searching to do before his par-
adigm shift.
DuBarry, 24, made his dream
come true by earning a scholarship
to Colgate University to play hock-
ey. The 6'4" left-wing was going
into his third year when he went
under -the knife for the third time to
'correct a persistent separated shoul-
der injury that required a bone graft
• from his hip. Though successful,
the operation spelt the end of his
hockey career. He endured sixth
months of rehabilitation on• the
shoulder which brought about a re-
alization for DuBarry.
"I told my-
self it wasn't
worth risking
it to go play
•
hockey to go
through all
that again,"
he said.
DuBarry
spent the
next year out
of varsity
sports and somewhat lost. To top
his mental misery off, his two
roommates played on the hockey
team and served as a constant re-
minder of what he had lost.
"It was tough going to games and
watching my friends do well when
I couldn't be' part of the team," Du -
Barry said.
He then turned to his other sport-
, mg love, golf.
• In April DuBarry made the de-
cision to try 'out for the varsity golf
team. He stayed at Colgate over the
summer and landed a job at Col -
gate's, Seven Oaks Golf Course in
the pro shop. Course pro Marian
Blain took DuBarry under her wing
-and helped DuBarry with his
swing. .

"Steve was a great worker this
summer," Blain said. "Every day-
light hour he was either working in
the pro shop or on the golf course."
DuBarry made the team in Au-
gust and has averaged a 77 score
over all tournaments. He even used
a 3 -iron to ace the 2I2 -yard, par 3,
1 lth hole at the Eastern Conference
Athletic Conference Upstate New
York Regional Tournament at the
Saratoga Spa State Park Champion-
ship Course. He finished the day
with. a 73, tied for third with his
teammate Jon Ryan — his highest
finish.
In his final semester at Colgate
on his way to earning a B.A. in so-
ciology, DuBarry hopes to become
a police officer with either the To-
ronto, Ottawa or London force.
Along the way the one-time Jr. B
hockey player (St. Marys Lincolns,
Georgetown Raiders, Tillsonburg
Titans) hopes to compete in am-
ateur golf tournaments back in On-
tario. He admits going pro is prob-
ably out of the question since there
are so many excellent golfers out
there.
DuBarry hesitated when asked to
compare his hockey, with golf.
"I think I did well on the golf
team because I really like com-
peting, striving to be the best I can
be," he said.
A golf aficionado since age 8,
DuBarry said he put his love of
golf on the backburner for his hock-
ey dreams. Now he can look back
on his college career and know he's
given both'of his sporting chances a
shot.
"I guess growing up hockey and
golf were my favorite sports," Du -
Barry said. "If I could've earned a
golf scholarship I would have been
just as happy."
