Juvenile Chiefs gunning for another Ontario title
The Chiefs are off to a good start by winning their first two games including a shutout over Cayuga

EXETER —.The Exeter Juvenile
Chiefs hockey club started their
quest for a provincial title repeat on
the right foot with two wins to open
the season.
At home on Saturday the Chiefs
blanked Cayuga 3-0 despite what
general manager John Rasenberg
called a "sluggish" effort.
Matt Froud, Marty deBryun and
Dan Storey scored for the Chiefs
while goalie Dennis Roth notched
the shutout.
The Chiefs started the season
with a 6-1 win over St. Marys on
Oct. 11.
Chiefs assistant coach•Mike Sol-
dan said the goal this season is 'to
defend their '96/97 Ontario cham-
pionship.
"Absolutely," Soldan said when
asked if they can see another title
come season's end. "We think we
have as strong a cltlh as last year."
Soldan said the Chiefs have up to
11 veterans are hack in the fold in-
cluding goaltenders Roth and Na-
than Hern.
Other returnees include defence-•_
men Brian Richardson and Blake
Schade and forwards Jeremy Stew-
art, Paul Knight, Froud, deBryun,
Bryon Ellerington and Ben Kaak.
Mau Glavin, Ryan Beckett. and
Ryan Soldan have not committed to
the team due to school. Mike Bow-
erman has opted to.play for the Ex-_
eter Jr. D Hawks while Brent Urlin,
and Matt Sims have moved away
for post -secondary education. '•

Chiefs.
"He brings a competitive spirit to
the team as well as a knowledge-
able background." Soldan said.
While juvenile hockey has been

pen, Soldan said the OHA has tak-
en measures to ensure more gentle-
manly play:
• Points are awarded for periods
won (so teams that are far behind
on the scoreboard in the third don't
turn the game into a boxing card);
-• Two game player suspensions
for each tight, with suspension du-
ration doubling with each fight
(four games for second fight, eight
games for third fight. etc.).
"Juvenile is making a real come-
back," Soldan said.
Except for London, that is. Lon-
don minor hockey doesn't offer
juvenile hockey this season, with
the Chiefs nearest competition be-
ing St. Marys and Clinton.

The Chiefs next host New Ham-
burg on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. start.
Panther field hockey in H -P final on Thursday
The Panthers will put their undefeated league record on the line against Listowel on Thursday
EXETER — The South Huron
District High. School field hockey
'team has done it again. — they've
made it to the Huron -Perth cham
pionship.
The girls made it to the final ver-
sus Listowel, to be held tomorrow
at SHDHS at 2 p.m., by beating St.•
Marys, 3-0 at home in the semi-
final. Shawna Rowe scored two for
the Panthers with Jodee Regier add-
ing a single. Kelly Fulton earned
the shutout between the pipes.
Listowel finished off Mitchell in
their semi-final match at Mitchell
5-2.
"The girls got off to a slow start
but .once they started to put it to-
gether they really took off," Pan-
ther assistant coach Linda Farquhar
said.
• SHDHS beat Listowel 5-1 in
their only showdown earlier this
season.
"We're looking forward to Lis
towel," Farquhar said. '"Teamwork
is what we're stressing."
The Panthers finished the season
with a 6-0 'record after beating
Mitchell 2-0 last Tuesday and St.
Marys 3-2 on Thursday. both
games on the road. Rowe and Lisa
Hodge scored the goals versus
Mitchell and Rowe got two and
Lori Richardson one in the St. Mar-
ys game.
The Panthers finished the season
with a 31-3 goals for/against ratio.
On • Saturday, the Panthers got a
taste of potential OFSAA action at
the Ridley College Tournament in
St. Catharines. The Panthers won
the tournament by beating Agin-
court 3-0 in penalty strokes after
the teams played to a scoreless tie
in regulation play. Richardson.
Rowe and Hodge scored on
SHDHS"s first three penalty
-strokes while Fulton stymied Agin-
court shooters.
SHDHS got to the final by beat-
ing Lorne Park 2-1 in sudden -death
penalty strokes after the teams
played to a scoreless tie in regu-
lation. Fulton let in only one Lorne
.Park penalty stroke while Richard-
son scored both Panther strokes.
In round-robin play, the Panthers
beat Regina Mundi 1-0 (goal by
Vanessa Laye), Ridley College 2-0
(goals by Rowe and Jaclyn Bayn-
ham), played to,a scoreless tie ver -

EXETER — The Exeter
Lawnbowling Club handed out
its '97 hardware at its annual
banquet at Trivett Memorial An-
glican Church on Thursday.
Barb Triebner was named
women's singles champ with
Marshall Dearing picking up the
men's singles honor. Gloria and
Peter McFalls aro the open pairs
champs.
The club also named its 1998/
99 executive officers: past presi-
dent June Hodgson, president
John Batten, first vice-president
Verona Snider, second vice-
president Les Hills, treasurer

downs on Friday and Saturday. The
Panthers will play at i1 a.m. and
2:30 p.m. on Friday with further
play depending on the outcome of
those games. The semi-finals are at
10 a.m. on Saturday with the finals
at 1 p.m.
Panther v -ball
defeats Medway
EXETER — The Panther junior
and midget boys volleyball teams
took it to Medway at home last
week during an exhibition tourna-
ment.
The juniors defeated Medway 2-1
with scores 15-12, 15-8 and 11-15.
They also whipped Central Huron
in three straight, 15-2, 15-2 and 15-
4.
The midget boys (the junior
team's Gr. 9 players, coached by
the T -A's own Deb Lord) beat
Medway's midgets 3-1 with scores
of 12-15, 15-10, 15-12 and 15-8.
The senior and junior teams
played St. Anne's and Goderich at
St. Anne's yesterday after press.

held their own versus the competition at the recent Huron -

Lucan Arena facelift almost done

LUCAN — Work to make the
Lucan Memorial Community Cen-
tre even more comely is almost
done.
The $23,000 project for the front
of the building including a handi-
cap access ramp. energy efficient
doors. painting (another 54.000).
concrete work and new curbs is
complete.
Two sports figure black sil-
houettes (hockey player and figure
skater) and 18" black letters
spelling out the arena's official
name are arriving on Oct. 27. arena
manager Paul Dyckman said. More
silhouettes including a soccer
player. ball player, swimmer and
basketball player could be added in
the future. The Lucan Booster Club
will pay for the 55,000 cost of the
silhouettes and letters.

cent Lucan council meeting:

The arena management board
will go to a credit card system for
hall bookings to avoid losing mon-
ey after those who rent the hall
don't show up or. cancel their event
at the last moment.

The management board will now
meet once every other month in-
stead of once a month to cut costs;

and Biddulph Deputy Reeve- Her-
man Steffens will end his nine-year
tenure with Tena hoard and nine
years plus as a Biddulph councillor
at the end of the month since he is
moving to Exeter after selling his
farm. Steffens has also removed his
name from the Nov. 10 municipal
election ballot after earlier sub-
mitting nomination papers.
No skateboarding here
The management hoard is not in
favor of skateboarders using a por-
tion of the parking lot.
"We've always had a problem
with it liability -wise." Dyckman
said.
