How was the
beach this summer'?
By Climatal! Vass Raay
T -A Reporter
GRAND BEND - The Grand
Bend beach had a successful sum-
mer except for a couple of notable
incidents detailed by the year-end
report by the Grand Bend Beach
Patrol.
An exchange student visiting
Grand Bend is now paralyzed after
a shallow water dive during the
week of June 20 and a theft cost the
beach patrol $700.
The report stated the beach was
well kept, kayaking and wind-
surfing was kept under control, the
bathhouse and walkways were kept
clean; and perhaps most important-
ly, the beach patrol had another
drowning -free year. No drownings
have occurred since the beach pa-
trol was established in 1982.
Clerk -Administrator Paul Turn-
bull explained most of the prob-
lems at the beach were usually re-
lated to the sand bar. He said peo-
ple who swam out to the sand bar
had trouble swimming back in.
However, Turnbull concluded the
report was reasonable and said he
has heard satisfactory remarks from
others on the overall performance
of the beach lifeguards this sum-
mer.
A number of incidents were stat-
ed in the report including the pres-
ence of a religious solicitor who
was handing out literature at the
beach. Beach Patrol Officer Dave
Steiginga ' wrote that he had asked
the individual to leave. He said in
response the individual said, "You

are doing the work of the devil."
Steiginga said he didn't want this
individual at the beach because he
sees this person as bothersome to
beach patrons.
Other incidents in the report re-
lated to the danger of the sand bar.
"Dave (Stergtnga) had a double
clutch father/son who were trying
to swim in from the sand bar," and
"Ryan (Walker, Beach Patrol) had
a non -swimmer 10 yr. old off sand

cidents were also recorded..
The most troublesome incident
this summer happened during the

The report stated, "an exchange
student was diving into shallow wa-
ter and is now paralyzed for life,
because he had broken his neck."
The report added the accident hap-
pened during a week when the pa-
trol was not on duty. The report re-
quested that Grand Bend Beach be
staffed at all times so that a similar
incident does not occur.
The reports' conclusion read,
"We will be looking into pur-
chasing some . equipment bags,
more fust -aid equipment, possibly
a paddleboat and new uniforms."
