Centralia church celebrates 75th anniversary

CENTRALIA - Centralia United
Church was filled to capacity on
Sunday as the congregation mem-
bers, past and present, celebrated
its 75th anniversary at 2 p.m.
Greeters Janet and Frank Hicks,
Etta and Elmer Powe welcomed
everyone and Mikayla Skinner and
Lindsay Powe assisted with the
guest book which had been donated
by Mildred Greb.
-Guest musicians shared their tal-
ents throughout the service, includ-
ing the Brittain family (Jeremy, Ian
and Megan), the Brandon family
(Heather, Catherine and Scott), and
-the Skinner family and friends
(Craig, Scott, and Jacquelyn -
.Skinner and Sarah Hodge and Mark
Parsons). Lois Wilson also sang
"The Lord's Prayer."
Minister Heather Scott brought
greetings. A combined choir from
Centralia and Zion West United
Churches sang and Marjorie Johns
played the organ and Judy Mills
played the piano. Chandra and
Pearl Dougall lit the Christ Candle.
Sam Skinner, Clerk of the
Session, introduced former minis-
ters and their families.
Children from the Centralia
Sunday_ School Choir shared their
musical talents. with the song "God
of the Sparrow." Brent Caslick
accompanied the children on the
piano. Tom Tomes gave scripture
readings.
"Rise Up and Make Her -Great!"
was the title of the presentation by
Dr. James Guest, the guest speaker.
He explained the favorite hymn and
how the people of God could con-
-tribute to the well-being of the
church. Dr. Guest, a retired dentist,
is the son of the late Rev. D.M.
Guest, minister at Centralia from
1959=1967. Rev. Guest was the
guest speaker at the 50th anniver-
sary of Centralia United Church on
October 24, 1982.
Minister Heather Scott led a time
of memoriam for former members
of -the congregation and their fami-
lies. She read the 23rd Psalm assist-
ed by Jean Caslick and Marg Cook.,
Flowers in the sanctuary were
donatcd by family and friends in
memory of: Bob Blair, Shawn
Mills, Jim and Lillian Blair,
Herman and Evelyn Powe, Ken
Greb, George and Kate Hicks, Ted
and Toots Bowden, Tom
Somerville, Alvin and Delia
Essery, Bill Elliott, Mr. and Mrs.
Murray Elliott, Agnes Anderson,
13111 and Nett Phillips, Steve and
Emma Tasko, Helen Keys, George
and Annie Godbolt, Otto and Irene
Brown, Orland Squire, Mr. and
Mrs. Nelson Squires, Steve and
Elizabeth Molner, Cooper and Elsie
McCurdy, George and Vera
McFalls, Ross McFalls, Freda
Rollings, Penny Lynn Smith,
Albert and Sylvia Smith, and
Sharon Bruls. .
Minister Heather Scott was
assisted by Sam Skinner in dedicat-
ing memorial gifts to the church.
Centralia Untied Church Choir
donatedseveral copies of the hymr
book, "Voices United." Revs. Clare
and Peggy Geddes donated an
organist's edition of "Voices
United". The family of Ted and
Toots Bowden donated a commu-
nion cup and tray.
Following worship, everyone
moved downstairs to enjoy fellow-
ship and food: The UCW had pre-
pared a lunch. Bev Prout created a
special cake depicting Centralia
United Church. The Heritage
Committee, including Janet Hicks,
Lilly Skinner, Mildred Qreb, and
Brad and Sandi Skinner, had com-
piled interesting historical informa-
tion. The display included photos
and information. The first Centralia
church was struck by lightning and
burned on August 6, 1921. The new
Centralia Methodist Church, the
current building, was opened and
dedicated on May 13, 1922. On
June 10, .1925, Methodists and
Congregationalists, plus a majority -
of the Presbyterians, joined togeth-
er to form the United Church of
Canada. Centralia United Church
was created.
The Anniversary Committee,
including Sam Skinner, Donna
Smith, Dorothy Rollings, Iva Blair,
Elmer Powe, Ray Mills,. Janet
Hicks, Mildred Greb, Bill Essery,
Madalene Tasko, Minister Heather
Scott, Aldeen Skinner, and Bob
Tindall coordinated the celebration.
Three babies were welcomed
intothe church on Thanksgiving
Sunday. The baptism of Nicholas
Kenneth Ross King, the son of
Susan Wettlaufer and Ross King,
was celebrated at Centralia United
Church. At Zion United Church,
Minister Heather•Scott conducted
the baptisms of Nicole Morgan
Hern,_the daughter of Andrea and
Michael Hern, and Margaret
Abbigail, the daughter of Lynne
Hern and Tim Hemenway.
Coming events '
Centralia UnitedChurch will
host a Furs Night for the Sunday,
School children on October 22 at
6:30 p.m. Children are invited to
come and bring a friend.
Exeter United Church invites
everyone to its Anniversary Dinner
on October 25 at the South Huron
Recreation Centre at 6:30,p.m. The
Paul Brothers and Shirley will be
featured entertainers. Tickets are
available in Exeter at Country
Flowers, Seips valu-mart, and
MacLeans Home Hardware. •
The Zion UCW will lead in the
October 26 worship at Zion United
Church.
The Bible Fellowship Church is
hosting an evening of gospel music
on October 26 at 7:15 p.m. at
Thames Road United Church. The
featured guests will be The
Bauman and Bramhill Quartet, Roy
Dreaning - "Irish Baritone and
Sharon Parker, soloist and pianist.
The Community Joint Church
Service will be held November.2 at
7 p.m. at Thames Road United
Church. Gisele Ireland from
Teeswater will be guest speaker.
Choir practice .will be held at
Thames Road on October 19 and
16.
Women from Centralia and Zion
West UCW should note their next
meeting date on November 6. At
Centralia, Ruth Cooper from the
Renascence Program and the Rural
Response for Healthy Child
Program in Clinton will be the
guest speaker. •
Euchre results
011ie Essery and Harry Noels
were High Hand winners at the
euchre games in Crediton. Jim
Davis and Mary Scott were Lone
Hand winner.s Low Hand winners -
were Doreen Lightfoot and Evan
Ibbitson. .
There were several tables of
euchre players at Heywood's
Restaurant recently too. High Hand
winners there were Mary Rhame
and Howard Dolan, The Special
was won by :Eileen Rollings, and
Lone hand winners were Mary
Scott and Archie Etherington. -
Worrell's Guest House
Nathan Griffith spent
Thanksgiving weekend with his -
mother and aunt at Gorrie. Roland
Rancourt spent the weekend with
his mother and sister and family in
London. Mai Hoang. spent
Thanksgiving in Kitchener with her
family.
Mary Ann, a WOTCH worker,
and her children, were out .
Wednesday night for supper and
had activities for the •residents. •
Bill Baker 'was surprisedon
Sunday with a special birthday sup-
per and cake. __ — '
Rose Cunningham was surprised
with a birthday• cake from Pauline,
Bill, Cody, Mel and Jeff at lunch
on Friday. On Sunday, several fam-
ily and friends gave her a supper,
entertainment and gifts.

spent the weekend in Wallaceburg t
and Dresdan where Pauline's fathery
Gerald Wicks received a plaque
and was inducted into the Sports
Hall of Fame. '
Mel Whittaker spent, three days ,
at Simcoe Fair accompanied by Jeff
Westacott, and Jeff visited with his
brother James of Delhi.
On Sunday, Jeff's brother -of
London visited.
Brian Misner's mother visited
him on Sunday at Wdrrell's Guest
House.

SHIPKA - Several from the area
attended the 122nd Anniversary
services, Sunday October 19 at
Greenway United Church. Guest
speaker wds Rev. Jack McKay, and
June McKay gave the childrens sto-
ry. Special music was by the
"Strathroy United Church Quartet."
Sympathy is expressed to mem-
bers of the Ratz family with the
death last week of Mrs. Roy (Clara)
Ratz. Funeral service was held Fri-
day October 10.
Sympathy also to the Sweitzer
family in the death of their aunt,
Nola (Sweitzer) Evans on October
7. Funeral service was held at Dela-
ware United Church, October 10.

EXETER -Pride of Huron
Rebekah Lodge #338 held their
installation of officers for 1998-98
on October 15 with 72 Brothers and
Sisters present.
Guests attended from Stratford,
Forest, Brussels, Ilderton and
Clinton. Sister Bev Campbell was
installed as the new Noble Grand.
The next euchre for the
Humanitarian Services Committee
is November 12 at 8 p.m. in the
lodge hall. The Lodge will take.pert .
in the wreath laying ceremony at
the Cenotaph for Remembrance
Day on Sunday. November 9.

Freddie Miller Woodstock, Steven,
Vicki and Laura Miller of Grand
Bend on Sunday.
Annie Zielman and Alberdine
Westerhof, spent the weekend with
Annie's daughter Susan and Wayne
Robson and family of Essex.
With Pat, Jake and Dennis
Schroeder were Jim and Sue Rich-
ards, Aaron and Breanna of St.
Thomas, Phyllis Case, Exeter, Sue
Anne Schroeder, Guelph and San-
dra Schroeder, Port Elgin.
The Baker family held their
Thanksgiving dinner at the home
of Gary, Sheona and Jeffery Bak-
er.
Tom and Rosanne Russell and
family of Essex spent Thanksgiv-
ing weekend with Russell relatives
in this area.
Ken and Marg Baker were guests
of Bob and Marg Reid, of Varna
who were celebrating their 50th
wedding anniversary on October
10.
Brian and Dawn Clarke, of Win-
nipeg Manitoba, and Ken and Marg
Baker were recent visitors with El-
liott and Kay Clarke in Grand
Bend.
Quite a number of' old friends
and neighbors attended the funeral
or called at the Box Funeral Home
in Parkhill, to pay their respects to
the late Harry, Sheppard, a former
resident in this area. Funeral ser-
vice was October 15 with interment
at Grand Bend Cemetery.
Saturday, October 18, Doug and
Ann Russell and Jennifer Monteith,
attended at the 62nd Convocation
Ceremony at Brock University, St.
Catharines, where Alex Russell re-
ceived his BA with Honors in Busi-
ness and Politics.

decorated
for Thanksgiving

SAINTSBURY - St. Patrick's
Church was decorated. with fall
flowers, leaves, fruit and vegeta-
bles as the congregation, former
members and friends came to
celebrate their 137th Harvest
Thanksgiving service at 10:30
a.m. with The Rev. Stanley Jay
officient.
The children's focus
• "What Grace Means H ,;,
MacGillivray prey the
hymn "Will You Colne and
Follow Me". Margaret Carroll
assisted with the scripture read-
ings. Courtney MacGillivray
and Crystal Davis were servers
for the service. The.message
was based on ,the readings
"Whatever: we do is in the hands
of God."
The congregation enjoyed a
time of fellowship and refresh-
ments in the parish hall. Mary
Davis was at the special service.
A collection of food was
Made for Daily Bread. -
A service will be held
Saturday evening, October 25 at
7 p.m. when they will celebrate
. the service of evening prayer.
Women of the church will
leave the Davis's at 5:3.0 p.m. on'
October 22 to attend the Perth
Fall Deanery Meeting at
Listowel. '
Hazel Davis attended the 75th
anniversary celebrations at
Centralia United Church on
Sunday at .2 p.m. She enjoyed
visiting with many friends from
church and Sunday School days.
Voyle Kurt of Sarnia, former-
ly of 241 Butler Street
Apartments in Lucan, visited
recently with Mary Davis at the
Exeter Villa. Mabel Needham
and Amy Lee were also visitors.
Mary Davis was dinner guest
Thanksgiving Monday with
Hugh and Hazel Davis. .
