Halloween party planned at Thames Road The evening will include a costume parade, prizes and a potluck lunch afterward Rhoda Rohde Thames Road correspondent THAMES ROAD - The October meeting of the Thames Road-Elimville U.C.W. was held at Thames Road Church with 36 women present. The meeting table was covered with a colored tablecloth, candles; flowers, leaves, etc. Virginia Warwick welcomed everyone and gave the theme "Thanksgiving." Ruth Skinner read a poem and Melonie Miller gave a reading. Mary Rowcliffe and Melonie Miller received the offering with prayer by Janet Coward. The group enjoyed a contest. Beatrice Dawson opened the business part of the meeting with everyone repeating the U.C.W. Purpose. The roll call was taken with each member telling about the antique they had brought to the meeting. Minutes and correspon- dence were taken. An announcement was read about a Christmas Travel Tour around Kirkton on November 15 and 16. It was agreed to give $50 to Palliative Care, $100 to each of Medical Electives, Local Food Grains Bank, Ziqualli, and Ethiopia (water). Sharon Lynn gave a report of the recent regional meeting at Dashwood. The 35th anniversary of the U.C.W. will be a church service November 16. It was decided to keep used postage stamps for the Bible Society. It is important to leave 1/4" around each stamp. Members were reminded to keep Campbell soup labels and grocery store tapes. The UCW is catering to two banquets in _November and December. The president closed the meet- ing with a Thanksgiving prayer. Group W served pumpkin pie and a beverage. Church service Bruce Delbridge lit the Christ Candle at the church service on Sunday morning at Thames Road Church. He welcomed everyone, gave the announcements and the call to worship. Rev. Jock Tolmay told the chil- dren a story "Sharing God's Dream." The choir sang "We Are One" accompanied by organist Marjorie Johns. Delbridge read the scripture and led the responsive reading. Rev. Tolmay's sermon was enti- tled "Thanks for your help, Job!" Shirley Kerslake and Marilyn Vandenbussche received the offering and were the greeters. The Thames Road-Elimville Halloween party will be held October 24 at Thames Road at 6:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for cos- tumes and each participant will receive a treat bag. There will be a potluck of sand- wiches and cookies. Assistance in the kitchen would be appreciated. Decorating for the Halloween party will be October 23 at 10 a.m. Anyone able to assist, please call Carolyn Johns. On October 26 an evening of gospel music is planned at Thames Road at 7:15 p.m. It will feature The Bauman & Bramhill Quartet, Roy Dreaning - Irish baritone, and Sharon Parker, soloist and pianist. Mission & Service Sunday is on November 2. Guest speaker will be Pat (Miner) Milliken. She is the Farm and Rural Resource/Outreach and Development Minister for London Conference. Lunch will follow the service. Donations for lunch will be given as a special offering to M&S. Also on November 2, The Community of Rural Churches are holding an evening service of worship, music and fellowship at Thames Road with orchestra and sing song at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Giselle Ireland. The Standing Committee will meet at Elimville Church on November 5 at 7 p.m. The council meeting will fol- low at 8 p.m. Personals Ray and Florence Boylan of Kenora visited a few days recent - ly with Bob and Bernice Jeffery. A number of relatives from this area were guests at the 50th wed- ding anniversary celebration for Ken and Leone Passmore at New Dundee on Sunday. Quite a number of friends and relatives attended the music jam- boree and birthday party for Gordon Pengelly in honor of his 85th birthday at Belgrove Community Centre on Sunday. October 15 marked the 95th birthday for Pearl (Cann) Merkley, a resident at the Exeter • Villa. Her daughter, Velma Bunker of Brampton, her son Roy Merkley of Southcott Pines, Grand Bend, and his wife Lois received the guests in the dining hall. ' All sang `Happy Birthday' as the cake was brought in and Pearl blew out the candles. Those present were Isabelle! Cann, Phyllis and Nancy Miller, Bob and Bernice Jeffery, Harry and Ruth Jeffrey, Doug and Ilene Rivers, Gordon and Florence Johnson, Margaret Love, Jean Hodgert and Evelyn Horn. Villa residents take fall tour EXETER A "Fun in Fall" theme at the Exeter Villa has made for some excellent fall activities for the residents. They went on a bus tour to see the beautiful colors of the season on October 4. Residents are getting ready for the annual Christmas bazaar on November 1. They have been mak- ing crafts and cutting up the fruit for Christmas cakes. Musical entertainment has kept residents in tune with the excite- ment. Max Ducharme and the Townliners performed as the resi- dents kept time by clapping their hands and tapping their toes. Doreen Skinner visited the Villa with her grandchildren. The enter-, tainment by Doreen and the Grandkids had rave reviews by the residents. The Family Heritage Singers brought their gospel music to the Villa for some fellowship and fun on Sunday afternoon. Lloyd Thompson Band and The Notes of Yesteryear, were resident favorites for musical entertainment. Marlene Mathers and Eric Kints are back on tour after summer holi- days.
