A variety of - languages sing g through the streets, and smiles born across oceans light up. Canadian -proud communities. We are vast, clean and accepting. • At least these are the impressions of Canada of three international exchange students -studying English at.Fanshawe College in London. On Thursday, Edgard Abramo from Iran, Man-Kyu Choi from Korea and Kumiko Hara from Japan visited Osborne Central Public School to teach students a little bit about their own culture and perhaps learn more about Canada themselves. , Hara came to Canada in April of this year and said she is very interesting in teaching others about Japanese culture. On Thursday she showed the grade one/two class how to create origami (paper folding) and how to eat rice with chop sticks. Hara is interested in old traditional Japanese arts such as.the tea ceremony, calligraphy and flower arrangements and said she hopes to teach Canadians about these, arts. "I'm not only here to learn about Canadian culture," she said. "1 want to teach people and share my own culture with them." Both Ahramo and Choi demonstrated Tae. Kwon Do to students at Ushorne Central on Thursday. Choi; who likes to go by the name Chuck, is a master of Tae Kwon Do. He said the art of Tae Kwon Do is not about fighting, but it -has . five key spirits that are important and helpful- to ones studies: The five spirits include courtesy, respect, patience, concentration and an empty mind for focusing: Abramo is.a Tae Kwon Do student of Choi. "1 started Tae Kwon Do two years ago`for.physical conditioning. l had to struggle with school and knew if I took Tae Kwon Do it would help me with school, and it did." . Both Choi and Abramo believe Tae Kwon Do is not about fighting, but it isa lifestyle • Some of the differences the exchange students see between Canada and their home countries are simple. They are differences - that mane Canadians have known all their lives. - Hara said one of the greatest differences between Canada and Japan was, when she was first picked up at the airport and got into a car. , "It was about the car," she said, "and driving on the left side." hi Japan, people drive on the right side of the road. Hara-said it was shocking to realize this ditference.,She said she -wasn't prepared for it. . "My host mother .was -laughing,' ie.said. . For Abramo the differences were in the cleanliness and order of Canada. "In Canada people foll9w traffic lights," he laughed, adding that in Iran the driving conditions are more chaotic! He alsp said he noticed a big difference in how vast Canada is, "Canada h so vast, so big," he expressed. "One thing about Canada that I Jove is its multiculturalism. When I go places I always see people from different cultures."' The -three exchange students are finding themselves" more at home as their stay progresses. Abramo admitted "Canada is now my home.'4. .. The dreams they carry with them are unique.Hara Wishes to continue studying the traditional Japanese tea -ceremony, a sacred art of Japan. Choi wants to study sports medicine therapy because "I am very interested -in sports." Abramo is hoping to land a career in electronics engineering technology. , Paper folding. Kur'niko Hara from Japan teaches six-year-old Evelyn Johns the art of origami.
