Facelift in the works
for library rest area
Removing the fence
and shrubs should
reduce vandalism.
EXETER -'The outdoor rest area
east of the Exeter Public Library
will get a face-lift this fall to de-
crease vandelism and improve the
area's appearance.
The area has' been an ongoing
problem according to a letter to Ex-
' eter Council -from Lihrary Branch
Supervisor- Helen. Hodgins. . •
"The wooden privacy fence
-around the patio has long been a
magnet for teen vandals. The
ground is littered with refuse and
broken glass." . ..
The problem has now escalated
from littering to the destruction of
public property including breaking
boards in the fence, attempting to
set the boards on fire and .damaging -
the library. The vandals have also
been shouting obscenities at pe-
destrians. -
On September 6, library staff
were forced to call the police over
the disturbance. _
-At a recent Exeter council Meet-
ing, council agreed staff will under-
take the following measures: re-
move/salvage wooden structure;
remove. all" small trees and :retain
large trees:.remove all bushes east
of the sidewalk; retain short bushes
and plants west of the sidewalk; re-
move most patio blocks; retainand
extend the sidewalk using patio
-blocks (at least for the time being);
and seed the area.
The work with .be done by parks
and recreation laborers, coordinated
with Public Works for equipment
use and operators as needed.

Water flow investigated
USBORNE TOWNSHIP - The
Usbome Township road depart-
ment have been looking into excess
water flows by an oil exploration •
test hole on sideroad 25-26. It was
said water has been flowing on the
road allowance for a considerable
length of time.
Amoco, who did the oil explora-
tion test hole, suggested using ben-
tonite to fill the hole. Bentonite is a
type of clay which expands when it
gets wet. Amoco also suggested
bringing in specialized equipment
to stop the flow of water.
Usborne Clerk -Treasurer Sandy
Strang said the water flow is not a
major problem.
"It's not a gush of water," she
said. "It's just that the grass is a lit -
de greener than in other areas."
Council said because a drain in-
stalled
nstalled by Amoco is working satis-
factorily and seems to have solved
the problem, no further action
should be taken at this time.
