All things bright and beautiful by Pauline Kerr - editor Samzeeli-City Somehow; i still :nakes'with Thanksgiving. , . One Sunday < ,tr„" .w ,ago: a certain clergyman had a brain vv e - instuad of the usual vegetahlcs and baskets - ,ght flowers. the Thanksgiving. decorations in front of the church would he done, by the children. Each little one would bring something he or she was thankful for (they could pick up the items after church). • - No doubt he had visions of Barhie dolls .mil• baseball gloves -in a colorful pile. and in truth u sounded quite sweet. The kids thought so. too. and • brought in their precious toys early Thanksgiving Sunday." ''• One little girl placed a moth-eaten. teddy hear on the pile. toddled away: then turned around and started crying. The clergyman took pity -on her and handed over her friend. He explained that there were plenty of toys, she'could hold onto hers. Which was pretty much, what • she had in mind. As the service was about to begin, a little guy whispered into his, SundaySchool teacher's ear that he had forgotten to hand in the item he wasghankful for. and had:biought in his pocket. She told him to sneak up and put it on the pile of toys.. The first clue that something was wrong was the soprano' section in the choir. One lady turned•pale as her choir gown. Another had her mouth wide open and appeared to be winding up for a glass - shattering scream. A couple of little boys started giggling. Then the teacher saw something slither. -Disaster was averred when the teacher made a fast grab at the creature and put it in the crayon box. After the children left church for their classes, the five -year-olds and their teacher headed out to a nearby field to release one.small, attractively -striped snake. - A childish prank'? Oddly enough. it wasn't. He brought the snake because he thought it was beautiful, and because he was•thankful for it. He explained that snakes eat flies and are good for the environment (he• got as -far as epvir..., anyway). There were a number of lessons we learned. not the least of which is it's sometimes a good idea to check your five-year-old's pickets before church. , • We learned beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, and that garter snakes aren't scary looking and slimy at all. They do. however. move very quickly. We learned children sometimes take things far too literally - if you want toys, you had better say toys. Don't ever tell a child to use his imagination and be creative unless you don't mind garter snakes on the altar. We also learned that children care deeply about even the most lowly of creatures, and thank God for the environment in all its wonderful diversity, even if they can't pronounce the word. ft's up to adults to protect this precious gift. our beautiful world, and preserve it for our children. and their children. May your Thanksgiving be bountiful. and may there be no snakes in your tableodecorations. 1 A Dr. J.
