Readers invited to send questions to candidates
On the
Street
by Jim Beckett
The interest in,local politics
will start to heat up as election
day gets closer.
In Exeter we're fortunate to
have two Jong serving
politicians vying.for the
position of mayor. This
leadership role will be critical
as many difficult issues will be
faced at the same time council
is losing several other veterans
who have chosen not to run
this time.
The choice is between Ben
Hoogenboom and Bruce Shaw.
Both individuals have different
styles and will certainly have
different approaches to dealing
with important issues..
The topic of amalgamation will
be one of.the top items on the.
agenda presenting -a wide
variety of choices for the future
direction of all municipalities
in this area. Wecould be faced
- with: a county -operated
government which could see
one large council running
everything.
Another.possibility, and more
likely, is seeing surrounding
townships, villages and the
-town of Exeter forming a
regional government with
elected officials representing
much larger areas.
Things will change.
Some jobs will be lost. Some
positions will be eliminated.
Greater -efficiencies must be
formed across the board to
cbmpensate.for decreased
financial support from the
Province.
The days of applying for a
grant and getting on with a
particular project are over.
Now, everything -must be cost
justified and be.entirely
- • practical because guess who
will be paying the entire bill.
In previous elections the
extent of canlpaigns by
councillors and mayors would
go something like this.
Candidates would announce
,they are running, put in a brief
- appearance at a town hall
meeting where they would
• take the microphone •for a
couple of minutes asking for
support 'from a small number
of ratepayers who managed to
find the time toattend the
.• .. meeting in the_ first place.
This would be followed up
with most candidates placing
small advertisements in the T-
- A, delivering -flyers and in
Some cases even ringing
doorbells to personally ask for
support.
Because the next term will be
.the, most challenging one
(possibly). in th a history of
Exeter, the T -A is hoping t
- hold both Hoogenboom's and
Shaw's feet to the fire in an
endeavour to get each,of them to
show why they should be the
person to lead and probably
-presideover the last council to
. exclusively represent the town of
. .Exeter.
We are giving all Exeter resident~
a chance to ask both candidates
whatever they want. It's similar
to a town hall meeting except
with a couple of advantages: The
other benefit is both
Hoogenboom and Shaw will be
'forced to answer each question
- ' directly and -in writing.
Hopefully this will clarify where
' they stand.

a hole into an 'area with potential

sound waves into the ground. The
sound waves bounce back. and
