Hard at work. Clockwise from
left, Julie Zuccolo tutors grade
6 student Lisa Hakvoort.. Bar-

painting from one of her stu-

marks papers at her desk. All
three new teachers are working
hard at making a difference in
• their student's education.
New teachers are
making a difference

Ann DeVries has worked with
children for 20 years. Julie Zuccolo
1 has only been working with chil-
dren for three -weeks. But they both
love what they do, and they want to
make -a-difference
in young people's
lives.
They arc also
both new teach-
ers.
'There are many
new public school
leachers in Exeter
Skochinski said she' works in
small groups or with individual stu-
dents, adding this mode of teaching
Icts her get one-on-one with the stu-
dents to "help them fell good about
themselves and who they are:"
David Pridding Squire is a new
school-based social worker. Prid-

imagin
this year. At Pre-
cious Blood and,
Exeter Public there are five in
eluding Ann DeVries, Julie Zuc
colo, Barbara "Desjardins, Davi
Pridding Squire and Judy Skochin
ski.
DeVries was transferred to work •
in a self-contained classroom for
grades 7 and 8 at Precious Blood
Public School this September. A
self-contained classroom is for stu-
dents who need extra assistance,
whether it is behavioral or medical.
"Most students lack self-esteem,"
DeVries said, adding, "Through the
self-contained class i help them
build on their esteem through suc
cessful activities, so they can fee
good about themselves."
Julie Zuccolo graduated from
Lakehead University in the sprin
of this year, and feels lucky to have
landed a job so quickly. Zuccolo
teaches French at Precious Blood
Public School, and believes she
was hired on as a French teacher
hecausc her background in French
helps her understand the language
on a more personal basis.
"Because 1 grew up in a fran-
caphone community, I think my
abilities to relate French to students
is high. Also, because I'm a young
teacher, 1 have a lot of enthusiasm
and I'm really anxious to teach."
Zuccolo said she is glad she's
teaching French because she sees it
as important tool for growth.
"Learning a second language is
important because it helps you with
your maternal language: It's much
easier to understand your language
if you know, another onc." Also
new to Precious Blood is Barbara
Desjardins, who teaches the early
years of school. which includes jun-
ior and senior kindergarten.
Desjardins was a substitute teach-
er for nine years until she realized
that she wanted to make her job a
full-time profession.
"You have more input and you
can implement things into the pro-
gram when you're there all the
time," she said, adding, ."11's hard
to do this when you substitute."
What she has enjoyed most in her
newly found career is that she can
see what children are really made
of.
"Every kid is special and unique.
i enjoy seeing them use their imag-
ination when they're cooking or
painting. You really get to see a dif-
ferent world through their eyes.
And you get to be a kid."
Judy Skochinski is a half-time re-
source teacher at Exeter Public

He said it is hard to pinpoint ex -
d actly what he does at ttic school's
- he works for, because he is in-
volved with a variety of different
things.
"1 am. a school-hasc(I counsellor
at every school," he said. "1 help
kids deal with life skills, or prob-
lems within the classroom. If a
family member' dies I help them
with that."
-- -"1-help-kids deal--with-separation--
or divorce. We talk about tolerance,
cultural differences, social -
effectiveness training, how to he a
good listener, anger management
and conflict resolution. But a lot of
it is just support," he said.
There are also three new educa-
tional assistants at Exeter Public
School this year, including Angie
Dtsjardine in Mrs. I -layman's class,
Mary Predhomme in the early years
class and Jan Hoover as a resource
educational assistant in the library.
