Panther jr. girls host first annual tourney
EXETER - The Panthers are
hoping the third time isn't the
chane when it comes to hosting .
girls basketball tournaments.
South Huron District High
School's junior girls hosted their
first annual tournament on the -
weekend.
The Panthers won -their last
game 34-22 versus Seaforth on
Saturday, but lost their prior two
games, a 30-26 heartbreaker to
Central Huron earlier on Saturday
and 45-19 to Dorchester on Fri-
day. Mitchell heat Dorchester 36-
29 to take the championship.
"All and all a great effort by all
girls as they continue to improve.
coach Brian O'Connell said.
The juniors lost their regular
season home opener to Madill 25-
21 last week. Cherisse Knip and
Lisa Forrest both netted six points
and coach O'Connell said it was a
good outing for their first game.
The senior girls couldn't get the
offence hitting on all cylinders
last week during their home open-
•er and lost to Madill 49-17.
Coach Terry O'Rourke said
their "inability to create scoring
chances" was the reason for the
loss.
Melissa Hayter topped Panther
scorers with six points while Mea-
gan Rat/ played a great game.
The Panthers travel to Goderich
today. Their next home game is
versus St. Antics on Oct. 1.
i'he midgets make their season
debut -today at Goderich during all
level play and South Huron and
travel to Seaforth on Monday.
They next play at honk versus St.
Anne's on Oct. I.

LONDON - South Huron Dis-
trict High School runners held their
own at the University of Western
Ontario cross country meet last
week.
Individual results. midget girls:
Fallon Giles, fifth; Melanie Cul-
bert, sixth; junior girls: Erin Robil-
liard, seventh: Kristin Brooks, 21st;
senior girls: Mandy Rolph, 16th;
midget hoys: Josh Verhoog, top
half of field; junior hoys: Dan
Snell, seventh; Dave Robilliard, top
third of field; senior hoys: Christian
Sluckless, seventh. Culbert and Ve-
rhoog were the most improved run-
ners of the day. SHDHS cross
country coach Joe Fulop said.
