The Tommy Hunter Show was a staple of their weekly evening viewing foryears. It was nice to have him intro- duce his elderly mother and his wife later in the show. Monday morning Volunteer Auxiliary met and plans are underway. for the October 29 craft and bake sale. The - Hensall Presbyterian women provided assistance and prizes•for Bingo on Monday after- noon. - They will b at the Horne each Monday in September. In the absence, of a minister on Tuesday afternoon, activity staff led the church service with the help of Yvonne Reynolds giving a devotional on "Along .Life's Narrow Way." Several favorite hymns and a prayer ended the service. Volunteers Mary Roobal and Sharen Dignan assisted. Wednesday's Breakfast Club was well attended- with an enjoy- able time.spent visiting following the meal. - . - In the afternoon, staff attended the funeral of Norman Stanlake, late of Queensway: On Thursday evening, John Perries, his wife and son joined him for the evening meal to cele- brate their 60th wedding anniver- sary. A decorated cake was served and pictures were taken to mark. the occasion. • Several Thursday Diners stayed to attend the panel discussion on Alzheimers sponsored by the Huron County Alzheimer Society. The panel fielded many ques- tions from staff and others who attended. • Coming events September 17: Coffee and refreshments at Queensway to support the Alzheimer Society, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; September 19:' 7:30 p.m. Doug Insley entertains in the Retirement Home Lounge. Life in China described at UCW meeting EXETER - The evening unit of Exeter United: Church began its fall season with a potluck supper. Unit leader Norma Cockwill opened the meeting with a poem "Faith To Live By." Thirty-nine members answered the roll call by sharing a favorite summer event. Correspondence from the Finkbeiner and Stone families for funeral luncheons as -well as the Coates family for the wedding din- ner were read. Helen Coates reported the Fall Rally will be held in Dashwood Septemher 29 at'6:30 p.in. with Pat Milliken as 'speaker. As a result, the executive meeting will he moved to September 15 -and the general meeting moved to September 22. Barb Tiedeman announced plans have begun -for the annual bazaar November 8. . Devotions were conducted by Helen Coates, Hazel Westcott, Marj Tuckey and Melva Ecker. Eckerand Laurie Shapton spoke about their trip to China. They Crediton WI meets, starts new season CREDITON '. - The September meeting of the Crediton Women's Institute was held on Tuesday, Sep- tember 16 at the home of Jean Neil. During the business meeting con- ducted by president Cheryl MacLe- , odplans were discussed for the up- coming district fall rally which is to take place at the Crediton.Commu-_ pity Hall on October 6, 1997. . . Jean Neil and Alma Davey pre- pared .lunch and conducted the pro- gramme. Several items were read of which some were thought provok- • ing and others reduced members to laughter: The ladies also learned how •to make a "cry baby" doll and were able to take their creation home at • the end of the evening. Shapton conclud- ed that China is indeed an emerging nation. - The meeting closed with every- one browsing through their photo albums and souvenirs: Time change for weekend masses By Roberta Walker Grand Bend correspondent GRAND BEND - On September 2, the members of the Catholic Women's League of Immaculate Heart of Mary Council met at the parish hall. CWL president Josy , Britton chaired the business. After all the summer fundraisers, the chanty account is very healthy. The first annual parish pork barbe- cue -was very well attended and showed over $400 profit. The two bake sales earned over $900 and the quilt raffle brought in over $1,000.• Britton thanked alt the members for their hard work, in making all these events so success- ful. There is a request for volunteers to bring Holy Communion to the sick and shut-ins of the' parish. Toni • Vandenberk will make the ribbons for the White Ribbon Campaign, to take place in October. About $850 was collected by. C.W.L. volunteers for the Glads for Epilepsy cam- paign, held in August. - Fattier Beck reminded everyone of the schedule change for Masses after Thanksgiving. October 19 marks the new schedule with One- Mass neMass at 10 a.m. on Sunday (instead of 9 a.m. and I 1 a.m.) and 7:15 p.m. on Saturday until next May (1998). Sunday. School also begins on October 19. - - Dolores Tighe gave a report on the Catholic Family Conference, held in London. The next meeting - will be held October 7. After the meeting adjourned the members enjoyed several games of bingo. Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church parishioners were happy to see their pastor Father Paul Beck,. gradually resuming his activities, after suffering a mild stroke earlier this summer. Bishop Sherlock has -been of great help during this diffi- cult time,. sending other priests ,o celebrate weekend Masses, and other necessary duties. The Bishop spent a great deal of time here, while Father Beck was still in hos- pital, keeping parishioners informed, and acting as celebrant for services. Everyone appreciated his involvement and support, and Bishop Sherlock returned the com- pliments to the parish, commending the congregation on.theirwilling- ness to step-in and help out wherev- er herev-er I Ceded. Father Beck is making a good recovery, receiving lots of support from friends and neighbors in Southcott Pines, as' well as. mem- bers of the parish. • Religious events continued to be observed during August and September. Congratulations to Ray Strong.and Sherri Fraser, who -were married- on -September 6. Congratulations and welcome It, John Fraser McKenzie, infant son: of' Patrick. MacKenzie and Jacqueline Carrier, and to Brett Joseph Bryson, infant son of Robert Bryson•and Arlene Kuntz. Both of these children joined the communi- ty of faith through the sacrament of - baptism. The sympathy of the parish is • extended to Martin and Thea Stokkermans, Matt and Wendy, on the loss of their daughter and sister, .Laura, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Her funeral was held September 10. There is a petition at the back of the church, requesting the Ontario, Legislative Assembly to cease pro- viding taxpayers' dollars to fund abortions.. In 1993; over 45,000 abortions were funded by Ontariti taxpayers at a cost of $25 millibn. CWL organizing program at Blue Water Rest Home MT. CARMEL - The Mt_ Carmel C.W.L: met on September 2 fol- -lowing Mass and Rosary. President _ Diane Kaak welcomed everyone back after the summer break, and gave a special welcome to the new parish priest Fr. Paul Baillargeon. A spiritual "reading was given'by Diana Hardy, minutes by Betty Cronyn,. treasurer's report by Barb Hartman and correspondence by Barb Dietrich. • • . Kaak thanked all who helped with. the •bake sale,.coffee week- ends, pie booth at Friedsburg and quilt ticket sales, during the past months. Members were reminded that the league is entertaining at the Blue Water .Rest -Home. on September 25- and Helene. Regier is organizing the program. Wellness clinic As part of the VON HOMME program's Wellness Clinic held in Lucan last Monday, local participants demonstrated an ex- ercise program desgined for seniors. The gentle activity helps Middlesex seniors remain in their own home as long as possible. The day also included an afternoon open house with local hehlth care providers.
