' Potato Leafhoppers are small. pale green. wedged•shaped insects with piercing and sucking mouth - parts. The. hind legs of a potato leafhopper are lung which allows them to jump from plant to plant. Its lifecycle takes approximately one month to complete and in ideal 'conditions, .two to three genera- tions may occur per season. The Potato Leafhopper damage is caused' by the removal. of sap from the leaves and the injection -of tox- ins into the alfalfa plant. Yellowing of plants - specifically "v'• shaped yellowing -on regrowth after first or second cuts, curled -leaves and in severecases. stunting of plants are symptoms to watch for during a growing season. Alfalfa varieties have traditionally had little or no resistance to this destructive pest. Novartis Seeds is testing, at the present time, an NK brand alfalfa enhanced with Maximizer® Tech- nology with resistance to the potato leafhopper. offering alfalfa growers protection against the significant damage potato leafhoppers can cause in alfalfa under certain condi- tions. . "This, variety of alfalfa exhibits good levels of resistance to the po- tato leafhopper." says Folkard, "and builds on the existing line-up of NK brand alfalfas, several of which have a three star quality rat- ing.., - Currently. growers only have two options to consider when PLH damage is found in alfalfa. "If the alfalfa is near the bud stage. it's recommended that it be cut and the regrowth monitored for damage. Alternatively, an insecticide can be applied if the alfalfa' is five clays or • more from the 'mid, ;rage." says Folkard. 'Novartis Seeds Inc.. a business unit within the world-wide Novartis agribusiness division, brings new skills in seed innovation to growers offering a complete line-up of in- novative.- NK hrattd quality cont.. soybean and t'orage. seed products.
