EXETER - Ila Mathers was guest speaker for the,
lilt meeting •of the fall season of the' Precious Blood
C W2., Exeter,. on September 11. .
The meeting was chaired by president•Mury Kortci-
na and- the guest speaker was welcomed and intro-
- duced hy Cecilia Mittelholi/.'. - .
lla Mathers, a former•teaeher. ,poke of her trip to
• 'India in October 1996. While there ;he met Mother
Teresa duringa visit toi her .Motherhouse in Calcutta.
The founder iif the Missionaries of Charity was
..dressed in her familiar hlue and white sari and was in
a wheelchair at that time: Mother Teresa died Septem-
her5 at the age of f37 and hada state funeral in Calciit-
ta.
Mathers stated that. 20 years ago. she and her fami-
ly became interested in helping ''the poorest •of the -
poor help themselves" when they meta Canadian Jes=-
uit, Pallier Abraham. principal of a school near Dar -
feeling, India. They still keep informed of successes
and failures that occur al this *hoot through a month-
ly newsletter.
The -chief reason tiir the trip to India was to visit the
mission of another Jesuit: Brother Bob Mittelholz, a
native of Zurich.
- Brother Mittelholtz had founded a. -hospital torpoor
TB and leprosy patients 25•years ago near Siliguri, In-
dia.
Mathers concluded hy saying that she had a deep"re-
. street for the Indian people and an apprecihtion of. the
work of the missions and the way they help the people
to he self respecting.. •
In. other husiness. preparations are continuing for the •
Penny Sale to he held at the Exeter Legion on Wednes-
day. Novcmher• 5. The CWL initiated the restoration of the figure for
the Christmas'. creche for Precious Blood mission at
Trivttt Church. "Die work was done. hy local artist and
high school teacher. Katherine Devlaeminck:'during
-her summer holiday.
Tribute was paid to Diane Verberne. one of the lead-
ers of the Precious- Btood Youth Group. Verherne is
leaving to work in New Zealand for six months.
