GiVEN UNDER MY HAND this 12th day of September, 1997 ELIZABETH BELL Clerk and Returning Officer Town of Exeter D UNITY Times -Advocate, September 17, I997 .Page 9 Plate collection to go on display By Chantal) Van Raay T -A Reporter EXETER - Whether it's a 1837 Queen Victoria plate or a collection of Princess Diana and Prince Charles plates from their wedding, Dr. Linda Steele of Exeter is proud to display her 30 -year-old collec- tion of antique and royal china. More than 200 pieces of the fin- est china sit in antique armoires in her dining room, line the walls or make themselves a place on her an- tique dining room table. Plates dis- playing faces from nearly 100 years ago and plates from about the past 10 years awe the most avid plate collector. Steele beamed proudly about one of the finer plates she has in her col- lection. "i showed them (avid china col- lectors) this tea pot," she said, pointing towards an antique royal tea pot in a drawer, "And they couldn't believe that 1 had this because they had never seen one of these before." Steele admits perhaps one of the more popular sets she presently displays at her century -old home is the set of royal wedding plates from Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding. "I had the set in my office for a while, as kind of a memorial," she said, adding, "people really thought it •was nice that 1 displayed them "They c believ h becau had nev one b for people to see." . This November, Steele will be displaying a large portion of her china set at the Lambton County Museum for a year. Steele said she frequents the Lambton Museum often and would notice she had artifacts and col- lectors items the museum. didn't have. She would joke with them about this, until finally the museum staff' asked her to prove that she had pieces from limited editions. She said she proved her point well, and when they came to see 'her. collection they had easily picked out at least 30 pieces they wanted to display in the museum. Steele explained that now, with the re- cent tragedy of the Diana, Princess of Wales, the museum will undoubtedly be back to chose the Royal collection of plates from one of ,this century's most memorable weddings - that of Prince Charles and Prin- cess Diana. But all in all, she admitted the museum was mostly interested in the age-old antique plates that filled her home. She also seemed most proud' of the age-old relics in her collection, and happy that she is being given the opportunity to dis- play them. "I think it's nice that people sup- port places like museums because they need it. it also gives collectors a chance to display what they have." ouldn't e that I ad this se they er seen of these efore."
