Alcohol in any form is a drug. Older adults generally
drink less alcohol than younger adults but they are
more sensitive to its . effects. Why? It's because
their blood- circulation, kidneys and liver work more
slowly to eliminate the alcohol. Also their bodies
contain less water to dilute the alcohol. Women are
more sensitive to alcohol's effects.
z.
Some good guidelines to follow if you do drink alcohol: don't drink dai-
ly. Drink fewer than eight standard drinks per week: (A standard drink
is 12 oz. regular beer or 5 oz. of wine or 1.5 oz. of spirits.) Keep track
of the number of drinks you consume each week.
The world's first wonder drug was Prontosil, the first sulpha drug, intro-
duced in 1935 by a German chemist, Gerhard Domagk. It led the way
to the antibiotic age of treatment of bacterial infections. ,
Head lice is common at this time of year. When treating head Tice with
a medicated shampoo', don't wash your hair with a conditioning sham-
poo first. Conditioners coat the hair and may protect the nits on the
hair from the lice medication. Be sure to use a fine nit comb after treat-
ment to remove nits.
